Become an intern at TNO!
About this position
The burial history of geothermal reservoirs is key for predicting reservoir quality. In this internship different maximum burial data and models are compared and integrated to come up with a best estimate of the maximum burial depth of reservoirs in the Dutch subsurface.
Reservoir quality of (geothermal) reservoirs is strongly determined by its porosity. The porosity is usually dependent on the amount of compaction that the reservoir has undergone. To predict the porosity of a reservoir it is therefore important to know its maximum burial depth. This internship project aims to integrate different maximum burial depth models to get a better understanding of the maximum burial depth of reservoirs in the Dutch subsurface. During a previous internship maximum burial depths were estimated from sonic logs. In this internship you will compare the results from the previous internship with existing burial models to try to come up with a best estimate of maximum burial depth.
What will be your role?
The project has a strong geological foundation. During this internship, you will compare burial history models and validate them against porosity, well, and seismic data, primarily using Petrel. The aim is to identify areas where model results differ and determine which model is most accurate. If feasible, the end goal is to create integrated maximum burial depth maps for relevant reservoirs. You will translate your findings into a report.
What we expect from you
For this internship, we are looking for an MSc student with a background in geosciences or (applied) earth sciences, who has an interest in geothermal energy. You have basic skills in log interpretation and seismic interpretation, or the motivation to quickly develop these skills. Strong analytical abilities and a basic understanding of Dutch geology are an advantage, but we are happy to support you in learning what you still want to develop. Most importantly, you are curious, take initiative, and enjoy collaborating on the sustainable use of the subsurface.
What you'll get in return
An internship at TNO means working in an environment where substance and impact are central. You will become part of a knowledge organisation where research and practice come together, and where experts collaborate on solutions to current societal and technological challenges.
Your internship is a period in which you can discover what suits you, where your strengths lie and what you would like to learn next. You are part of a professional working environment, gain insight into how things work in practice, and have the opportunity to build experience that goes beyond this internship alone. For many students, an internship is therefore also a first step in discovering whether TNO could be a potential next step after graduation.
In addition, we offer you:
