The Data Analytics Engineer II role sits within the Data teams, which are responsible for data platforms, warehousing, enrichment and machine learning functionality, enabling teams across the organisation to understand and manage business performance and improve the customer experience.

Data Teams

The Data team's responsibilities include data platforms, warehousing, enrichment and machine learning functionality, enabling teams across the organisation to understand and manage business performance and improve the experience of customers. You will be responsible for delivering products that advance data excellence and innovation within your product team and across the business, helping shape Booking.com’s data journey.

Platform Team

The Platform team is responsible for creating, developing and maintaining a robust data platform and integrations in and out of it. In conjunction with colleagues across Booking.com, the team is embarking on a modernisation programme focused on infrastructure transition to the cloud and a complete overhaul of data ingestion, quality, security and governance. Providing a platform as a service is the goal.

Data Enablement Teams

Using the ecosystem created by the platform team, the Data Enablement teams work closely with teams across the business to ensure that data is ingested, transformed and enriched into secure, high-quality, well-governed consumption layers. Their customers range from Finance to Marketing and beyond. These teams are engaged in a data modernisation programme that will transform how data is produced, managed and analysed to support better decisions and business growth.

Flights Data Enablement Team

This Data Engineering team is focused on Flights data at Booking.com. The team is building new products for creating, maintaining and presenting flights data using the Booking Data Exchange (BDX) platform. They enable analysts and product teams to make data-driven decisions about product improvements, streamline processes and build a deeper understanding of their systems.

Responsibilities

As a Data Engineer, you’ll work alongside curious, energetic and focused people. You will help deliver the vision of a fully integrated, scalable, high-performance and compliant data platform and pipelines. You’ll help roadmap and deliver replacements for current ad-hoc data solutions with strong foundations built on modern technologies and practices, making it easier to produce large quantities of high-quality data for consumption and analysis. You are also expected to actively contribute to team discussions, share opinions and align behind decisions once made.

  • Iteratively develop next-generation scalable, reliable, flexible, high-performance data pipeline capabilities and data platforms.
  • Use standardised tooling and procedures to work with business users to model and implement data pipelines which are performant, scalable, reliable, secure, well governed and observable.
  • Engage with other teams as needed to achieve business objectives.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of data quality in core datasets and data pipelines.
  • Help other teams identify and resolve data quality issues.
  • Maintain data quality, security, integrity and governance by following regulatory requirements, company standards and best practices.
  • Adhere to defined principles for architecture, quality and non-functional requirements.
  • Proactively help colleagues grow professionally, taking a significant role in onboarding and mentoring new team members.
  • Continuously improve services you own, making them more performant and optimising resource usage.
  • Ensure that products and services are kept up to date with the latest technology standards and company guidelines.
  • Ensure service level agreements are met by implementing tests and processes.
  • Perform profiling to find bottlenecks, optimise performance and ensure performance metrics are set up and monitored for product health.
  • Connect business and product goals to complex technical tasks.
  • Solve issues by prioritising customer impact and performing root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Contribute to Booking.com’s growth through interviewing, onboarding and other recruitment efforts.
  • Work in an agile environment and contribute to your team's ways of working.
  • Provide out-of-hours support on a rota.

What You’ll Bring

Booking.com expects Data Engineers to have a strong foundation in Big Data Engineering to help deliver resilient, scalable data pipelines and solutions that support analysis, customer analysis and machine learning needs.

The team is looking for driven Data Engineers who enjoy solving problems, are proactive, collaborative and goal-oriented, and who communicate effectively and believe challenges can be scaled with the right mindset, collaboration and tools.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience designing, building and optimising Data Lakes or Warehouses in databases such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery and similar technologies.
  • 2+ years of experience in a scripting language such as Python or Scala.
  • 1+ years of experience in streaming using Kafka.
  • Experience driving the implementation of reliable and trusted metrics defined by the business, connecting disparate datasets into unified data products in the Lakehouse and/or Data Warehouse.
  • Experience producing curated, reusable analytical data products to enable self-serve analytics for internal customers across departments.
  • Experience modelling data following best practices and data warehousing methodologies such as Data Vault and Kimball dimensional modelling.
  • Self-motivated to explore new technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A self-starter mindset and strong motivation as a team player.
  • A root cause analysis mindset for problem and issue resolution, with the ability to break down complex problems and find solutions using logical and analytical thinking.
  • Full comfort working in English, both written and spoken.

  • Experience with Airflow, Snowflake and pySpark.
  • Experience working in a Data Governance L3 environment.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Passion for test automation.
  • Intrinsic curiosity about technological innovations and staying on top of the latest trends.
