Functiebeschrijving

We are looking for a Data Engineer with Oil & Gas domain expertise focused on subsurface and wells data initiatives. The role centers on building, integrating, and operationalizing data pipelines that handle complex subsurface datasets and industry-standard file formats, enabling geoscience, wells, and digital teams to derive value from data at scale.

This data engineer requires hands-on experience with subsurface applications such as OpenWorks, strong data engineering skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with domain experts.

The data engineer operates at the intersection of domain expertise and advanced data engineering, working on complex subsurface data challenges within the energy sector.

  • Collaboration with experienced subsurface and digital professionals in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Working with modern data platforms and industry-leading standards (Energistics, PPDM, OSDU)
  • Contributing to digital transformation initiatives in the Oil & Gas sector
  • Supporting data-driven decision-making for geoscience, wells, and reservoir engineering teams
  • Operating in a hybrid work environment with both on-site collaboration and remote work flexibility

Key Responsibilities

Data Engineering & Integration

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines for subsurface and wells data
  • Ingest, validate, and transform industry-standard Oil & Gas file formats
  • Integrate subsurface applications (e.g. OpenWorks) with enterprise and cloud data platforms
  • Implement batch and streaming data ingestion patterns
  • Develop reusable data services and APIs to support analytics and downstream applications

Subsurface & Wells Enablement

  • Support geoscience and wells data workflows by providing high-quality, curated datasets
  • Work closely with subsurface domain experts to understand data usage and requirements
  • Enable data accessibility across interpretation, analytics, and innovation use cases

Data Quality, Governance & Standards

  • Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and monitoring
  • Ensure metadata capture, lineage, and traceability of subsurface datasets
  • Align with industry standards such as Energistics, PPDM, and OSDU
  • Support data governance and compliance requirements

Required Skills & Experience

Domain Knowledge (Oil & Gas)

  • Strong understanding of subsurface and wells data domains
  • Experience with industry-specific file formats, including: SEGY/SEG-D (Seismic), LAS/DLIS (Well Logs), WITS/WITSML (Drilling and real time data), Geological models, grids and surfaces (ZMAP, GRDECL)
  • Familiarity with subsurface interpretation platforms and data ecosystems

Core Technical Skills

  • Solid programming experience using version control systems (Git), CI/CD pipelines, container & orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong programming skills in Python (Pandas, PySpark)
  • Solid SQL experience (PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server)
  • Experience with ETL / ELT tooling (e.g. Airflow, Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue)
  • Experience with data warehouses, data lakes, and lakehouse architectures

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Hands-on experience with OpenWorks (Halliburton), including data loading and project structures
  • Experience with data platforms such as Databricks or Snowflake
  • API-based data integration (REST, OSDU APIs)
  • Exposure to the OSDU Data Platform

Cloud & Data Platform Experience

  • Experience working with cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS)
  • Experience with object storage (Azure Blob Storage, Amazon S3)
  • Understanding of cloud-native data architectures

Professional Competencies

  • Ability to bridge geoscience and engineering teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Clear and effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in complex, heterogeneous data environments
  • Proactive and collaborative mindset

Educational Background & Experience Level

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Geoscience, Petroleum Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in Oil & Gas data engineering, subsurface data management, or related roles
  • Experience working in integrated subsurface or digital transformation initiatives

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with OSDU, or large enterprise subsurface programs
  • Exposure to machine learning or advanced analytics in subsurface contexts
  • Familiarity with DevOps / DataOps practices
