Are you looking to deepen your role in international ESG advisory? As a Consultant Environmental & Social Performance – International Project Finance, you will work across project finance and sustainability services, applying international E&S standards to help clients improve project performance and bankability across sectors and regions.

What will you do

You will apply your Environmental and Social (E&S) expertise to support international projects and investments across different geographies and sectors. You will help clients align with international E&S standards and strengthen the bankability and performance of their developments. Depending on the size and complexity of assignments, you will take responsibility for specific deliverables or work closely with senior colleagues who hold overall project responsibility.

Your core responsibilities include working on:

  • ESG advisory in project and investment contexts, delivering E&S due diligence and performance reviews primarily related to project finance
  • Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and associated management plans, taking ownership of defined workstreams and deliverables in line with international standards
  • Sustainability strategy services, such as ESG performance and double-materiality assessments, sustainability roadmaps, and support with reporting and implementation

In addition, you will contribute to:

  • Developing new work through proposal development and client engagement
  • The team strategy and service development by applying your expertise and identifying opportunities to strengthen our ESG offering
  • The continuous improvement and innovation of our services, including the use of digital tools and AI

Where you will work

You will be part of the ESG Team within the Advisory Group Energy & Process in the Netherlands. This group consists of around 90 consultants who combine technical, environmental, and strategic expertise to support clients in their transition towards a low-carbon economy. Our services span transactions advisory, master planning, project definition, and conceptual design, with a focus on energy systems, logistics, and supply chains.

You will also be part of a broader global ESG Community of Practice, consisting of approximately 40 colleagues based in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Mozambique, Indonesia, Vietnam, New Zealand and Australia. This community includes broad environmental consultants with international experience as well as specialists in areas such as marine biodiversity, carbon footprinting, land quality, climate risk, resettlement and green finance. Together, we actively share knowledge, collaborate across disciplines, and form integrated teams alongside our technical colleagues and local partners to deliver our projects.

The ESG Team itself comprises 11 environmental consultants with a strong international focus and a strong understanding and practical experience of applying internationally recognized environmental and social (E&S) performance standards to assess projects and investments, primarily in the energy and industry sectors, and to some extent in the maritime and aviation sectors.

Examples of recent projects our team has worked on include:

  • Identification of E&S constraints during the pre-feasibility phase of a gigawatt-scale renewable energy hub in Australia
  • An ESIA scoping study for a green hydrogen project in Oman
  • Acting as Lenders’ E&S Advisor for a major new port in Morocco
  • Development of a global ESG framework for Airports Council International (ACI)

What you bring

You are an experienced ESG consultant with strong technical depth who enjoys applying international E&S standards in project finance contexts. You take responsibility for the quality of your work and are comfortable coordinating inputs across disciplines and geographies.

You bring:

  • A multidisciplinary academic background, ideally combining a master’s degree rooted in environmental or sustainability discipline (e.g. Environmental Sciences, Applied Earth Sciences, Sustainable Energy) with exposure to economics, governance, law, business, or social sciences through a minor, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
  • Typically 5+ years of experience delivering ESIA and Lenders’ E&S Advisory services in line with international ESG standards (e.g. IFC Performance Standards and EP4), including their practical application in assessing risks and defining mitigation measures in projects
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills, including the ability to develop pragmatic solutions for complex or unfamiliar project settings
  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision, take ownership of your deliverables and demonstrated adaptability and pro-activeness
  • Experience coordinating subject-matter experts, technical specialists and local partners
  • Ability to work effectively across a variety of sectors in fast-paced or demanding environments, and comfortable operating in international and multicultural project environments, combining flexibility, pragmatism and readiness for international travel
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, with excellent command of English and working proficiency in Dutch. Other relevant languages to our international project portfolio (e.g. Portuguese or Arabic) are a plus

Having expertise or experience in one or more of the following is considered a plus: sustainability roadmapping; social and human rights topics (e.g. resettlement, labour conditions) or biodiversity topics (e.g. critical habitats); value-chain assessment; sector experience in renewables and decarbonisation; project experience in South-East Asia and/or the Middle East; or Strategic Environmental Assessment.
