Would you like to contribute to a livable future for everyone? As a Research Manager in the Powertrains (PT) expert group within the Unit Mobility and Build Environment (MBE), you can make a significant contribution to this ambition.

About this position

The Powertrains expert group consists of about thirty colleagues who work together on sustainable and efficient powertrains. This is done both on behalf of and in collaboration with industry, governments, and other stakeholders in the Netherlands and abroad. The Powertrains Test Centre (PTC) is affiliated with PT, and the PT research manager is also ultimately responsible for the PTC. The PTC has about twenty employees.

What will be your role?

The Powertrains (PT) department in Helmond contributes to the mobility transition through innovations in powertrains. The department’s expertise is mainly deployed within the MBE market segment Mobility, in the propositions Sustainable Mobility (cleaner fuel engines, alternative fuels, electrification) and Safe & Sustainable Maritime & Offshore (alternative fuels for shipping). The department is closely connected with the Powertrains Test Center (PTC), where much of the related experimental research takes place. Both departments share a single management team and are located in Helmond at the Automotive Campus, where the Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) department is also housed.

The transition to sustainable mobility is achieved through multiple technological solutions for powertrains based on electrification, hydrogen (including methanol and ammonia), biofuels, and e-fuels. Driven by this societal ambition, the department has developed a broad portfolio of technologies in recent years, particularly focused on heavy duty applications. Based on this, advice is given to policymakers and end users, and innovative solutions are developed and demonstrated for and with the industry. The goal is to arrive at a suitable mix of energy carriers for mobility and to maximise energy efficiency, improve the lifespan of drive systems, shorten development time, and reduce total ownership costs.

The expert groups are effective in their mission because they have a diverse and talented group of researchers and technicians with backgrounds and experience ranging from automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and information technology.

As research manager, you are ultimately responsible for all aspects of the PT and PTC groups, from strategy to operations and from planning to execution. You are also responsible for all personnel matters. Your team consists of about 50 professionals who want to be challenged by you in their personal and professional development. Therefore, you are not only their manager, but also someone who can empathise with and build upon their expertise, discussing with them how they can grow both in their expertise and personal development. This requires knowledge of the relevant fields and insight into the network of stakeholders and their interests.

As research manager, you provide an inspiring vision, aligned with the strategy of the Unit MBE. You ensure alignment of knowledge and capacity with market demand and encourage collaboration with other expert groups, both within and outside our unit. Developing a high-quality technology portfolio and connecting it to the aforementioned propositions are among your core tasks. You lead daily operations, monitor project progress, and maintain contact with relevant stakeholders. Due to the nature of the work and the energy carriers present, the PTC is an ARIE location to which legal requirements are attached to ensure safety. Combined with the requirements imposed by customers on the services, this means that additional measures regarding quality, safety, health and environment (QSHE) apply to the work. As research manager, you are ultimately responsible for policy and implementation in this area.

You will not do all of this alone. You will work together with the current Deputy Research Manager, and together you will divide all duties and responsibilities within the groups, for which you, as RM, remain ultimately responsible.

Of course, you will also collaborate with the management team of MBE. Together, we are building a strong unit for the future.

What we expect from you

As Research Manager, you have the drive to help your team grow and to collectively contribute to the world of tomorrow. You recognise, value, and encourage the unique talents of each individual. You also regularly hold up a mirror to yourself, because the better you know yourself, the better you can engage in meaningful dialogue with others. This allows you to truly connect with your colleagues and create an inspiring work environment where innovation, social impact, cooperation, and collegiality go hand in hand. You are resilient and know how to deal with resistance or setbacks. You understand the dynamics within TNO and are able to make decisions when it matters most. You can rise above your own interests, with the TNO or unit’s interests ultimately taking priority. For this, it is important not to get lost in details, but to organise and delegate effectively. It is also essential that you seek advice when making decisions and make good use of the extensive knowledge and experience available within the department. Asking questions, consulting, and ultimately daring to decide are important qualities. You know how to align the expertise of your staff with market demands. For new topics, you develop plans to further build expertise and determine which research facilities are needed.

What Else You Bring:

  • A relevant university master’s degree, for example in Automotive, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics or Chemistry.
  • Extensive experience in (deputy) managerial roles, including experience with (financial) business operations, risk management and QSHE (Quality, Safety, Health, and Environment). You are used to working in an environment where research and innovation are conducted in a project-based manner.
  • Experience with innovation management and change initiatives.
  • You are proficient in both Dutch and English, at a minimum of B2 level.
  • You are flexible and capable of handling a wide range of tasks in a complex environment.
  • You have an affinity with the department’s area of work and the associated clients and stakeholders.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis plus a flexible holiday (prorated) that can be used on a cultural, religious, or otherwise important day of your choosing.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.
