About this job

We are currently looking for a Scientist to join the team in Utrecht.

Are you a (post-doc) researcher with expertise in satellite remote sensing of greenhouse gases (with a focus on emission detection)? Are you eager to contribute to solving societal relevant environmental problems and looking for a team that is equally motivated? We are looking for you!

You will work on a team that maintains and develops atmospheric chemistry and transport models together with national and international partners. These models enable the calculation and trace of the composition, origin and expected distribution of a wide range of substances in the air (such as particulate matter, ammonia, methane, nitrogen-dioxide, ozone, etc.), and to reach verdicts on air quality and atmospheric composition (anywhere in the world). This department also uses its expertise to assist government policymakers and decision-makers in the private sector when it comes to transitioning to a more sustainable, cleaner and socioeconomically more desirable economy. Our focus is on air quality, climate, and nitrogen, and hence our staff are at the heart of debate in society.

Main responsibilities

As a Scientist, you will work on the use of, for example, methane observations from the TROPOMI and upcoming TANGO instruments.

You will perform application and interpretation of satellite data either directly, using statistical or mass balance approaches, using plume models, or using our more complex atmospheric chemistry transport model.

Requirements

Must:

  • You have a PhD in Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences, Physics or a similar field.
  • You have demonstrated experience in using satellite remote sensing data.
  • You have a background in working with geospatial data.
  • You have knowledge of and experience with chemistry transport models.
  • You have experience with atmospheric modelling and data assimilation techniques.
  • You have strong programming skills using Python, Fortran, or/and similar, and are able to handle large datasets.
  • You are passionate about atmospheric modelling and working with large datasets.
  • You have an excellent command of the English language.
  • You are not afraid to ask critical questions and are eager to tackle new challenges together with your colleagues.

Nice-to-have:

  • You have experience with emission inversion methods of varying complexity.
  • You have previous experience with radiative transfer modelling.
  • Good command of the Dutch language is a plus.

Our story

At S[&]T we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.

Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.

We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
