The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is a decentralised agency of the European Union (EU), located in Amsterdam. It is responsible for the scientific evaluation, supervision and safety monitoring of medicines in the EU.

Traineeship: Evolving Veterinary Division data analytics capabilities

We are looking for a trainee in the Veterinary Medicines Information Management Office.

Context

As part of the Veterinary Medicines Information Management Service (I-CA-VMS), you will join a team dedicated to modernising how the Veterinary Division of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) handles information about animal health. As regulatory needs evolve, there is a growing demand for clearer insights, better reporting, and more effective use of data analytics tools. This project focuses on improving how veterinary regulatory data is transformed into meaningful information that supports daily work and long-term strategic decisions.

Project description

We are looking for a motivated trainee to help us evolve our Veterinary data analytics roadmap. Your mission is to help the Veterinary Division move from basic reporting to advanced, self-service analytics. You won’t just be crunching numbers and building reports; you will be helping Veterinary colleagues on this journey and training them in the use of self-service tools.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Requirements gathering: meet with Veterinary colleagues to understand how business problems can be solved with modern data analytics;
  • Data engineering and preparation: perform data preparation (cleaning, organising, and structuring raw data) to ensure it is ready for analysis;
  • Design and build: help create guided analytics dashboards and self-service models that provide clear insights into veterinary medicine trends;
  • Data architecture: assist in rationalising and cleaning data tables to ensure existing data models are robust and accurate;
  • Empower colleagues: support the rollout of self-service tools by creating user guides and helping to train colleagues on how to use data visualisation tools;
  • Innovation: identify opportunities to improve how we store and connect different sets of veterinary information.

Learning outcomes

This traineeship offers good learning opportunities and after it you will have:

  • Technical and practical know-how: you will gain practical experience in data modelling, data and business analysis, and use of industry-standard cutting-edge analytical tools;
  • Communication and collaboration: you will gain experience in translating technical data concepts for non-technical audiences in an international environment;
  • Business and data analysis skills: you will be mentored and coached by senior analysts and through hands-on experience you will grow your skill set;
  • Business knowledge: you will be exposed to the entire Veterinary business process, from submission to evaluation.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for consideration for this placement, you are required to:

  1. enjoy full rights as a citizen of a European Union Member State or Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway;
  2. possess a university degree in computer science, data science or data analytics (minimum of three years or more) that must have been obtained between 6 May 2025 and 6 May 2026 or be a university student on an Erasmus + or a similar programme or a PhD student or a Master's student with a previous fully finished degree in the areas mentioned before.
  3. a thorough knowledge of English (at least level C1) and good knowledge of other official EU language (at least B2) of the Common European Framework for Languages

Additional skills

Technical competencies:

  • Familiarity with data modelling is preferred
  • Familiarity with reporting tools (e.g., PowerBI) is preferred
