Your assignment
This internship/graduation assignment focuses on researching ink mist interactions in printers.
Within our printers, one of the risks is the aggressiveness of the inks. For example, components that are glued together risk falling apart as a result of the ink dissolving the glue. For some components, this is not liquid ink flowing past (like in the print heads or ink tubes), but merely ‘ink mist’ that floats through the machine. While we know this risk exists, it is very hard to do a representative test to investigate the lifetime of these parts, as we usually perform soak tests (fully immerging materials in liquid). These tests have been proven to incorrectly predict the chemical interactions and therefore lifetime.
In this assignment, you will investigate what exactly this ink mist consists of and whether this composition depends on other factors (ambient conditions, travel distance, concentration, time, etc.), in order to have a better understanding of the relevant ink components which are in the ink mist affecting materials in our print engines. With a given setup to generate the mist, you will be inventing a way to obtain samples, analyse them and draw conclusions from these measurements. You will have access to various chemical analysis techniques and are expected to be communicative towards colleagues who could help you with these analyses.
In the end, we hope to come up with a view of what the mist consists of and what this composition is sensitive to, such that a future student could use this information to develop a representative test liquid which doesn’t require a misting station.
