Internship | Developing a CO₂ Cleaning Procedure for Optical Manufacturing Surfaces

About this position

Cleanliness is critical in optics manufacturing, and new technologies offer promising improvements. A CO₂ cleaning system has recently been purchased to support surface cleaning according to ISO standards. Initial tests were performed using a rented system on aluminum surfaces. The goal of this internship is to develop a new cleaning procedure using CO₂ for aluminum surfaces used in optics manufacturing (OM), and to lay the groundwork for broader application across other materials and geometries.

What will be your role?

You will be responsible for planning and executing a series of tests using the CO₂ cleaning system on aluminum surfaces. This includes designing test plans, performing hands-on experiments, analyzing results, and reporting findings to relevant colleagues. You’ll work closely with the optics manufacturing team to ensure the procedure meets operational and quality standards.
This internship offers insight into managing a small research project, from planning and coordination to testing and reporting, within a high-tech production environment.

What we expect from you

  • You are currently enrolled in an HBO program in a relevant technical field (e.g. applied physics, mechatronics, materials science, or engineering).
  • You enjoy working in a team and communicating your findings clearly.
  • You have a hands-on mindset and are comfortable working in a lab or production setting.
  • You think analytically and can solve practical problems.
  • You are capable of planning and documenting your work in a structured way.

What you'll get in return

  • A highly professional, innovative internship environment, within a team of top experts.
  • A suitable internship allowance (615 euro for wo-, hbo- and mbo-students, for a full-time internship).
  • Possibility of eight hours of free leave per internship month (for a full-time internship).
  • A free membership of Jong TNO, where you can meet other TNO professionals and join several activities, such as sports activities, (work-related) courses or the yearly ski-trip.
  • Use of a laptop.
  • An allowance for travel expenses in case you don’t receive an OV-card.
