Join the Process Excellence Team as a Senior Scientist

Job Description

The Process Excellence Team is seeking a Senior Scientist who will lead Process and Product Modeling efforts across the Global Animal Health Manufacturing (GAHM) organization. The Senior Scientist will develop and utilize advanced computational models to accelerate and optimize the development, launch, technical transfer, and routine production of our Global Animal Health portfolio.

The Process Excellence team is a part of the Global Animal Health Manufacturing (GAHM) Science and Technology (S&T) organization and supports both large and small molecule lines of business.

As a potential candidate, you have advanced graduate degree(s) in an engineering or scientific discipline relevant to pharmaceutical process and product modeling, for small molecules and/or large molecules. Your graduate research or work experience must have a specialization in process modeling and computational sciences. In this role, using a variety of process-modeling tools, you will build and apply predictive tools for small and large-molecule drug substance (upstream and downstream) and drug product manufacturing unit operations. Your expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and associated engineering models (mass, momentum, energy transport, chemical/biochemical reaction kinetics, etc.) would be a strong asset to this role. Candidates who have expertise in other modeling techniques should also apply, such as flowsheet models, population balance modeling, data driven models, and other modeling methods.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary scientists and engineers to create end-to-end predictive models that support drug substance and drug product manufacturing operations. Examples of problems on which you will work: scale-up or scale-down, tech-transfer, fluid-flow and multiphase-flow modeling occurring in drug-substance unit operations (bioreactors, mixing vessels, dissolution, chromatography, filtration) and drug-product unit operations (freezing, thawing, mixing, filling).
  • Develop and apply mechanistic and data-driven models including filtration, process flowsheets, process economics, and “digital twins” to solve real-world manufacturing challenges encountered during commercialization of new products.
  • Drive innovation by championing computational tools that reduce costs, minimize experimental batches, shorten timelines, and improve product quality and process robustness. Communicate complex modeling insights clearly to project teams and leadership, translating results into actionable experimental and manufacturing strategies.
  • Lead the deployment of computational solutions using commercial software, open-source tools, and proprietary models you help develop.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, managing multiple projects and timelines effectively.
  • Present your work at internal meetings, scientific conferences, and contribute to publications.
  • Lead collaborations with external partners such as universities, research organizations, and contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs/CDMOs) to advance modeling capabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) with 0-3 years of relevant experience, OR Master’s degree (MS) with 4-7 years of relevant experience. Degree may be in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Engineering, or any other relevant discipline.
  • Strong research background in computational modeling applied/relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Expertise with one or more computational techniques relevant to pharmaceutical modeling, including but not limited to: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), first-principle engineering models (mass, momentum, energy transport, chemical/biochemical reaction kinetics, etc.), numerical methods (setup and solve linear/non-linear equations, ODEs, PDEs, etc.), flowsheet models, population balance modeling (PBM), statistical methods, data driven models, and other modeling methods.
  • Experience with relevant software tools (e.g., M-Star, ANSYS Fluent, or other CFD software; SuperPro, ASPEN Plus, gPROMS, BioSolve, Dynochem, GoSilico, CADET, etc.).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python (preferred), Matlab, C/C++, or R.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Industrial or relevant research experience with biologics, vaccines, or sterile liquid manufacturing processes. Candidates with strong modeling and computational experience in other process industries will also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in applying modeling outcomes in highly regulated manufacturing environments. Knowledge of cGMP concepts.
  • Experience with high-performance computing.
  • Strong publication, presentation, or patent record.
  • Knowledge of statistical software (Minitab, JMP) and other related modeling techniques such as machine learning (ML) or artificial methods (AI), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), etc.

Required Skills: Collaboration, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation, Computational Models, Drug Product Development, Drug Product Manufacturing, Predictive Modeling, Product Modeling, Python (Programming Language), Small Molecules

Preferred Skills: Experience with high-performance computing, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and statistical software (Minitab, JMP).

The successful candidate will be eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits. Available benefits include medical, dental, vision healthcare and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, including 401(k), paid holidays, vacation, and compassionate and sick days.
