Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Technician Environmental modelling at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

Climate change, air quality, and the energy transition play a crucial role in determining, implementing, and monitoring policy. To develop and execute effective policies, it is essential to gain insight into emissions and concentrations of gases and substances—both on a regional and national level, and ideally in real time. Within the Environmental Modelling, Sensing & Analysis (EMSA) department, we use measuring equipment and sensor networks to monitor the concentrations of various gases and particles in the air. Will you make it possible, as a technician, to deliver these concentrations and provide the TNO team and Dutch society with the right data?

What will be your role?

You’ll be conducting important hands-on research, carrying out measurements at unique locations across the country. Imagine setting up a monitoring network around a major city or industrial area, measuring nitrogen at agricultural sites, or monitoring emissions from shipping. The measurement data you provide is crucial for environmental studies, helping industry, government, and society as a whole.

You’ll be involved in creating measurement plans, preparing sensors, performing filter measurements and hardware setup in the lab, and handling actual installations in the field. During the measurement period, you’ll contribute to analyzing the collected data and reporting the results. In addition to these measurement campaigns, you’ll ensure that the equipment functions properly. This includes calibrating measuring instruments, ordering parts, organizing and sorting equipment, and much more to keep the lab running smoothly.

What we expect from you

You are interested in the functioning and operation of measuring instruments, and technically skilled enough to fine-tune these devices. You are adventurous, hands-on, and highly creative when it comes to finding solutions. You take initiative in tackling tasks and possess strong communication skills, which is important because you will often collaborate with fellow technicians and other project team members. Since the work is dependent on weather conditions—and the weather doesn’t always follow a nine-to-five schedule—you need to be flexible. But this flexibility works both ways: you will have a lot of freedom in organizing your working hours.

What else do you bring?

  • An HBO (higher professional education) diploma in measurement technology, (analytical) chemistry/physics, electrical engineering, or a related field;
  • Some experience with research or as a technician;
  • Experience with programming is a plus, for example in Python, to operate measuring equipment;
  • VCA Basic certificate. If you don’t have this yet, you can obtain it through TNO;
  • Excellent command of the Dutch language and good command of the English language;
  • A BE driver’s license or the motivation to obtain one.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between €3.500,- and €4.500,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + €180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
  • A good pension scheme.
