Internship/Graduation: digital twin

Digital Twin technology is increasingly being adopted across industries to create virtual representations of physical systems. These models enable real-time monitoring, simulation, and optimization of assets and processes. At DEMCON, we are exploring how Digital Twins can enhance our engineering workflows and product lifecycle management.

What are you going to do?

The goal of this internship is to explore the current landscape of Digital Twin solutions and implement a basic Digital Twin prototype based on an internal 3D model. The intern will gain hands-on experience with relevant tools and technologies while contributing to our internal knowledge base.

Assignment

Research component

• Market Analysis: Investigate existing open-source and commercial Digital Twin platforms (e.g., Unity Reflect, Siemens NX, Ansys Twin Builder, Azure Digital Twins, etc.).
• Internal Review: Identify tools and technologies previously used within DEMCON for Digital Twin or related applications. Interview relevant stakeholders to gather feedback on their experiences.
• Comparison Report: Summarize findings in a structured report comparing features, ease of integration, licensing, and suitability for DEMCON use cases.

Implementation component

• Model Selection: Choose a simple 3D model from an internal project (in consultation with your supervisor).
• Digital Twin Development:
  • Create a basic Digital Twin using one of the researched platforms.
  • Implement core functionalities such as:
    • Real-time data simulation or integration (e.g., sensor data emulation).
    • Visualization of system states or parameters.
    • Basic interaction or control logic.
• Documentation: Provide clear documentation of the implementation process, including setup steps, architecture, and lessons learned.
• Demo Setup: Create a simple demo showcasing the Digital Twin.

Additional (Optional) component

• Immersive Visualization: Explore the possibility of viewing the Digital Twin in Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) using tools like Unity, Unreal Engine, or Microsoft HoloLens.
• Demo Setup: If feasible, create a simple demo showcasing the Digital Twin in an immersive environment.

Deliverables

• Research report on Digital Twin tools and internal practices.
• Functional prototype of a Digital Twin based on a selected 3D model.
• Technical documentation and user guide.
• (Optional) VR/AR demo of the Digital Twin.

What do you bring to the table?

• Bachelor or Master student in the field of Computer Science, game designer or similar studies
• Experience with programming
• Experience with C++, C#, or Python
