Product Design & Development Cabbage Breeder

The Product Design & Development Cabbage Breeder is a member of a multi-disciplinary team contributing to the development of superior seed and trait products for global vegetable seeds customers and consumers. Product Design & Development Breeders are responsible for leveraging genomic, phenomic, and environmental data to design improved germplasm, to test potential products utilizing accelerated breeding schemes and quantitative genetics, and to execute pipeline activities to advance customer-centric products in line with business strategy. With a deep knowledge of the crop, the Product Design & Development Breeder will provide guidance to R&D and Commercial partners. The Product Design & Development Breeder is expected to provide technical expertise to develop and implement new technologies and processes that positively impact the breeding pipelines, while partnering with functions across Bayer Crop Science to deliver on commercial priorities.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively participates as a core member and technical expert in the Brassicas, Root & Bulb Product Unit, ensuring meaningful knowledge and data transfer during critical points in crop cycle timelines.
  • Executes the technical strategy to deliver robust products in line with product concepts and commercial needs: design improved cohorts of germplasm that are aligned with market assessments and product concepts; co-develop and implement experimental and testing designs, data collection methods, and leverage modern analytics to improve product advancement.
  • Identifies key areas of opportunity for new technology implementation, process improvement, and securing Intellectual Property while positively contributing to a collaborative, innovative, and design-centric culture.
  • Fosters strong collaborative relationships with partners in Integrated Planning & Insights (IPI), Phenotyping & Seed Generation (P&SG), Data Science & Engineering (DSE) teams, and others to ensure proper execution of our technical strategies and coordinate successful pipeline delivery while adapting methodologies to modern climate conditions and management practices.
  • Continuously deepens crop knowledge by actively participating in Commercial and Customer-facing events to translate and communicate product knowledge with partners and growers, to apply customer needs and market trends in an aligned pipeline strategy.
  • Leverages deep crop knowledge for directing both in-field and data observations to measurably improve product placement and launch effectiveness.
  • Acts as a champion of the digital transformation by supporting the development and implementation of strategic technical outcomes, including leveraging real and simulated data (when possible) to improve quantitative trait selection and product placement decisions.
  • Supports Sustainability, Safety, Health, and Environment initiatives, and Compliance, Business Conduct and Human Rights focus and culture in the team.

WHO YOU ARE

  • PhD degree in Genetics (human, animal or plant) Plant Breeding, Animal Breeding, Quantitative Genetics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Data Science or other relevant scientific field with minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or MS degree with 8+ years of experience in breeding programs, genetics or applied data science projects
  • Demonstrated experience with performing data analyses with large biological datasets using (or preferably, creating) scripts in R, SQL, Python or similar coding languages
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams to achieve common goals
  • Demonstrated experience leading and influencing activities of cross-functional teams without direct reporting relationships
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders through challenges and opportunities; facilitates solutions
  • Results orientation with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/priorities simultaneously
  • Customer-centric mindset, with proven record of identifying customer needs, prioritizing resources, and bringing timely and sustainable solutions
