Join TenneT and Shape the Future of Energy

At TenneT, we work every day on tomorrow’s electricity grid. Our goal? A reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system. As a Technical Specialist MTDC Design in the LionLink project team, you play a crucial role in realizing this ambition. Ready to make an impact?

About the Role

As a Technical Specialist in MTDC Design, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in the design and implementation of Multi-Terminal DC (MTDC) systems within the LionLink project, a first-of-its-kind cross-border development between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that all design specifications meet industry standards and client requirements, and help power the Netherlands by managing and reviewing the technical details of the MTDC system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical review – Act as the main reviewer of contractor deliverables in HVDC system design and controls during the MTDC FEED and subsequent main MTDC contract. Develop and review MTDC design documents, ensuring compliance with technical standards and best practices.
  • Testing & validation – Witness factory acceptance tests of the contractor for functional and dynamic performance of the HVDC control & protection system and the Master Controller.
  • Requirement development – Collaborate with TenneT stakeholders (asset management, energy system planning, system operations) to develop detailed technical requirements for LionLink.
  • Grid compliance – Define and monitor the grid compliance trajectory for LionLink in alignment with all relevant parties.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to deliver high-quality data center and MTDC solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle, from concept to completion.
  • Participate in site assessments and feasibility studies for new and existing MTDC projects.
  • Support the integration of new technologies and innovative solutions into MTDC designs.

You will join the HVDC team, consisting of [number] colleagues. Together, you work on the LionLink project, a pioneering step towards an integrated North Sea grid. Within our team, we foster a collaborative, innovative, and international environment, where technical excellence and teamwork go hand in hand.

Qualifications

At TenneT, we are looking for professionals who help shape the future of our electricity grid. We expect you to bring the right experience and skills to make a valuable contribution to our team and mission.

  • Educational background – BSc in Electrical Engineering, preferably MSc in Electrical Power Engineering.
  • Technical expertise – Strong understanding of power systems and power electronics, ideally HVDC systems and Multi-Terminal DC applications. Proven experience in data center or MTDC design, preferably in a multi-tenant environment.
  • Professional experience – 2–5 years of relevant experience, ideally with HVDC systems.
  • Analytical skills – Experience with network calculation tools (ideally PSCAD and real-time simulation environments) and ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Personal skills – Structured approach to work, strong quality awareness, eagerness to learn, and adaptability within large organizations. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Stakeholder management – Ability to work effectively with stakeholders across different regions in Europe.
  • Language skills – Fluent in English, both written and spoken; additional European languages are a plus.
  • Mobility – Willingness to travel (UK, Sweden) and valid driver’s license (Class B).
  • Technical breadth – Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical, and IT infrastructure systems.
