Mechanical engineering internship: support the imaging tooling team

Introduction

As the ASML lithography systems get bigger, the (detrimental) impact of smaller particles on the system's performance increases. Protecting particles in the micro- and submicrometer range from landing on critical surfaces has therefore become a key challenge in managing the lifecycle of ASML machines. Active means of protection have been deployed, in particular, in manufacturing and service tools. These tools are developed by the Tooling Technology Departments in Development & Engineering (D&E) within ASML, which is where this internship will take place.

Your assignment

Because the number of contamination protection tools has risen sharply over the past few years particularly related to EUV systems, there is a need to study how the different tooling technical solutions compare against each other and how they impact the specifications placed on the ASML Lithography systems on particles and defectivity.

Key deliverables include:

  • Perform literature study into latest developments/innovations;
  • Create overview of and contact internal ASML experts & competence team, VCCN or regional suppliers in the field of active contamination control measures for tooling applications;
  • Develop testing setups, procedures, and methods to compare the performance of different protection tooling solutions in a statistically significant manner;
  • Verify flow behavior with CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modeling. Predict particle distribution and air transport with combined experimental set-up and CFD tools;
  • Design and/or order dedicated hardware, including, tooling based on the introduction of active particle flows;
  • Execute the test plans and document the results and evaluate the results.

This is a bachelor or master internship, also suitable for a graduation internship, for minimum 6 months (preferably 12 months), minimum 4 days per week (3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as soon as possible.

Your profile

To be a match for this internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a bachelor's or Master's in (mechanical) engineering, science, physics, materials or aerospace;
  • Are structured minded, action oriented and proactive
  • Are eager to collaborate with different stakeholders across the company
  • Have clear communication in both verbal and written English
  • Have experience with CAD and CFD (computational fluid dynamics)

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you’re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
