Internship Opportunity in Mechanical Engineering at Qlayers

Duration: September 2025 – January 2026

At Qlayers, we’re revolutionizing the way large-scale industrial assets (such as ships and storage tanks) are coated. Our patented robotic technology enhances coating quality, boosts efficiency, and significantly reduces environmental impact.

We’re currently developing a cutting-edge robotic actuation system designed for use in the maritime industry. This system combines an exceptionally large reach (>20m) with high-precision movement (<10 mm), and maintaining accuracy under dynamic conditions is critical to coating performance.

Environmental forces such as wind and inertia can cause the robot to sway, reducing coating precision. This internship is focused on the research, design, and development of stabilization solutions for robotic actuation systems.

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you’ll actively contribute to this mission-critical R&D project. Your work will involve both theoretical analysis and practical implementation.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on damping systems for large, dynamic structures
  • Develop conceptual designs for stabilization mechanisms and make a trade off
  • Simulate system dynamics and responses
  • Build and test scaled-down prototype in real-world conditions
  • Present findings and document design iterations.

We are looking for

Professional qualifications and skills:

  • BSc/MSc level Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace, or Robotics Engineering student
  • Strong interest in structural dynamics and mechanical design
  • Understanding of mechanical vibrations and dynamic systems
  • Experience with CAD and simulation tools (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, Python)
  • Proactive attitude and ability to work independently
  • Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and testing
  • Strong communication skills in English (written & verbal).

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with control systems or mechatronics
  • Previous project experience involving dynamic structures or stabilization.

Personal qualifications and skills:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Creative mindset.

We offer:

  • Gross monthly remuneration of €350
  • Flexible working hours (but in line with our core working hours 10:00 – 15:00)
  • Healthy lunch
  • Being part of a movement to disrupt the traditional coating industry with innovative solutions
  • Being a part of a tight-knit international team
  • Unique opportunity to contribute to the development of real-world robotic systems and leave your mark on the maritime innovation landscape.

Qlayers helps conservative and energy intensive industries to become more sustainable.
With our automated coating application method, we can create nature-based microstructures such as the drag-reducing ‘sharkskin’ microstructure in certified coatings at high speed to increase energy efficiency.
