Internship: UXperience – Elevate every interaction at Vanderlande

Assignment type: Internship

Start date: September 2025

Assignment duration: 4 – 5 months

Desired study: User Experience Design, UI/UX design studies or related

Language: Dutch/English

Description of assignment

Vanderlande is a market-leader in logistical process automation. Within ICT we have teams dedicated to developing all kinds of tools to support our engineering process of conveying and sorting systems. The Engineering Suite of Tools (“ESoT”) composes a set of these tools. With ESoT our engineers design conveyor systems for our external customers. More specifically this is done with the System Designer of ESoT, which is a plugin on top of AutoCAD and more recently also Revit. Imagine Rollercoaster Tycoon but with conveyor belt parts! Our engineers begin with the general layout of a system and then step by step configure more parts and details – even up to the color of specific hardware. This work results in deliverables that are handed over to the next phase in engineering where parts are ordered and eventually installed at the customer site.

ESoT was first created 15 years ago. Then around 7 years ago it received a major overhaul, resulting in ESoT 2. At the moment we see that our user base is expanding, a lot of different profiles are using the solutions, and a lot of new features are requested. Also new techniques emerge every day. So, we want to take a moment and re-evaluate how our tools are experienced from an end user point of view, specifically the main tool, the System Designer. How do users score its usability? What parts are the main areas of concern? The learning curve to use ESoT has grown over the years too – how can we improve this? Are there any UI techniques we can apply that make functionalities more intuitive? The focus of this internship therefore will be performing UX research to answer these questions.

Department description

The department ‘Applications – Engineering’ consists of 2 teams (A and B). Team B develops and supports the tools that make up ESoT. This is a range of different servers and applications that support the engineering process from sales to supply, the main one being the System Designer.

In total 11 people form Team B: 9 developers, 1 Product owner and 1 Scrum master. Backgrounds vary, seniority too, but all are very willing to cooperate and share knowledge. You will work on your own project, with 2 direct supervisors but with the support of the team in an agile way.

Tasks/responsibilities

  • Collect data from our end users by means of interviews, questionnaires and any other relevant research techniques
  • Create journey maps for core functionalities
  • Define possible improvement points with high impact (Quick wins and Major projects)
  • Create mockups and/or implement small suggestions
  • The resulting report should reflect the experiences of our end users and suggestions on how we can improve the usability in different ways

Your profile

  • Software development skills are not a pre, but nice to have for implementing small improvements
  • Knowledge of C#, WPF and Telerik
  • Good fluency in English
  • *Mandatory enrolment to a Dutch Education System & resident of The Netherlands.
