Advance the Future of Integrated Photonics as a Device Physicist at TNO in Enschede

Want to make your mark on our time by advancing the development of Integrated Photonics? Become a Device Physicist at TNO in Enschede!

What will be your role?

At the Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC), we are shaping the future of integrated photonics. Founded by TNO (at Holst Centre), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the University of Twente (UT), and PhotonDelta, PITC is dedicated to bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and real-world applications. Our work contributes to solving global challenges — from improving road safety and health monitoring to enabling secure communications and energy-efficient data handling.

Would you like to pioneer cutting-edge photonics technologies and build a new R&D team within a collaborative and high-impact environment? Join us at TNO-PITC in Enschede, where science meets innovation in a joint initiative supported by key players in the photonic chip industry.

Your responsibilities:

  • Realize stress-based light modulation with very low energy consumption, and understand how process and design considerations impact performance.
  • Exploit linear electro-optic (Pockels) effect to demonstrate high speed electro-optical modulation using barium titanate.
  • Interact with specialists from UT and TNO and contribute to roadmap development related to photonic integration.
  • Participate with expertise and take responsibility in ongoing collaborative projects with international and local customers.
  • Engage industry-wide best practices in your work to ensure quality.

You will be employed by TNO with your primary office located at the University of Twente (Enschede).

What we expect from you

We’re looking for a proactive, hands-on team player who thrives in a research and development environment. You also bring:

  • A PhD in Applied Physics, Nanoscience, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with solid knowledge of semiconductor device physics and thin-film technology.
  • At least 4 years of experience in cleanroom-based technology development, including expertise in thin-film deposition and photolithographic patterning.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to take ownership of practical work.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Experience in integrated photonics is an advantage.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + €180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 or 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Extensive relocation package for international candidates.
  • A good pension scheme.
