This role involves taking the lead in the development of IBFD’s online research platform, determining organizational needs, and creating development plans, ensuring high-quality testable code, and fostering a collaborative and efficient development environment. The Lead Software Engineer is based in Amsterdam and works in a hybrid setting and reports directly to the Development Manager.
Established in 1938, the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD) has steadily grown into the world’s foremost authority on cross-border taxation and a respected home to collect information about international taxation. Tax practitioners from all over the world rely on IBFD for high-quality and independent tax knowledge and research. As a non-profit foundation, IBFD brings tax knowledge to the whole wide world, through publications, training, research and data. IBFD is a hybrid organization, with activities in the field of publishing, training, government services and academia. Around 250 employees work in four offices on three continents, from 40 countries, with 700+ external authors and correspondents worldwide.
The Tech & Data department serves as the development hub for IBFD and is also responsible for managing infrastructure and service management. The department comprises approximately 25 full-time employees and external developers operating in near-shore and offshore arrangements.
The development teams develop and maintain IBFD’s Tax Research Platform, a proprietary portal for cross-border taxation expertise, as well as several document processing systems and publication workflows. The team is also maintaining and developing the website, web shop, and online learning modules. Current development work follows Agile methodologies and uses a service-oriented architecture. IBFD promotes a culture of DevOps and applications are being migrated to a Kubernetes cluster. The development team works in close collaboration with the Infrastructure & Service Management team, that is responsible for IBFD’s infrastructure and cloud services.
Lead Development: Act as the senior full stack engineer for IBFD’s online Tax Research Platform and contribute to the front end, backend services, APIs and middleware. Part of the development team works in an offshore construction.
Deliver Technical Specifications: Write and maintain technical specifications and user stories for (offshore) developers, ensuring clear communication with external and internal stakeholders.
Provides technical leadership: Lead and guide the offshore development team, fostering collaboration across time zones to deliver high-quality software solutions in alignment with project goals, code quality standards, and delivery timelines.
Ensure Code Quality: Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to best practices in coding standards, testing, and documentation. Advocate and propagate clean code and code quality (Java, Golang, and Angular).
Promote DevOps Culture: Advocate for and implement DevOps practices, including continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Foster a culture of collaboration & respect between the development team and the Infrastructure & Service Management team, following some ITIL based principles.
Mentorship: Coach and mentor junior developers, providing guidance and support to help them grow in their roles.
Boost Innovation: Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies and proactively suggest improvements to our development processes, tools, and technology landscape.
Software Development Experience: Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer or developer, or a similar role, with a strong background in software engineering and programming.
Educational Background: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, demonstrating a solid understanding of software engineering best practices and industry standards, including proficiency in functional, procedural, and object-oriented programming.
DevOps Expertise: In-depth understanding of DevOps principles and practices, including experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (e.g., Docker), and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
Cloud Experience: Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
Agile Methodologies: Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, MIRO) and experience with ITIL service management is considered a plus.
Secure Coding Evangelist: Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing secure coding practices.
Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Golang, and Angular. Experience with other languages and frameworks is a plus.
Collaboration: Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate takes initiative and ownership and is able to plan and prioritize.
Leadership: Proven track record managing, leading, and upskilling development teams that work in different time zones with different cultural backgrounds.
Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues.
Stakeholder Management: Effectively managing relationships with stakeholders to understand and fulfil their needs and expectations.
We offer a full-time position (37 hours per week) with a salary, depending on the level of seniority and relevant work experience between €6,200 and €6,800 gross per month. Completed by an attractive package of fringe benefits, amongst others:
