About this job

We are currently looking for a Software Engineer to join the team in Delft.

We are currently looking for a Software Engineer for our Space & Science business unit in Delft, the Netherlands, to work on the software development for our Data Processing and Analysis systems and services.

One of our teams within the Space & Science business unit is working on delivering solutions that facilitate automated processing of Earth Observation (EO) data, and provide both automated and interactive analysis of such data. For example, we provide an interactive environment for scientific end-users to develop and test their own data processors. Similarly, we deliver quality control systems for various missions such as Biomass, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-5P, that monitor satellite instrument performance and perform validation. Our toolchains are also used for public services that allow scientists to easily retrieve and analyze EO data, especially data concerned with the atmospheric composition.

Currently, we are looking for people who enjoy working on state of the art (open-source) technologies and have in-depth knowledge of the software programming domain.

Main responsibilities

  • Software development within various projects and for the common toolstack.
  • Together with the software architect you are responsible for the design, e.g. you can come up with new solutions and know when to re-use existing ones.
  • Take ownership of and guide team members through the software development process.
  • Deliver the software to the customer.
  • Communicate with the customer in terms of project scope and requirements.
  • Provide support to (scientific) end-users.

Requirements

You meet the following requirements:

  • You have completed an academic education (MSc) in Computer Science or Informatics, or alternatively you have a well-established track record in software engineering and have experience with the complete software engineering lifecycle.
  • At least 5 years of experience with coding in at least 2 languages (preferably a high-level and low-level language).
  • For example: you have experience with C, C++ and Python software development.
  • Experience working with Linux (including system administration tasks).
  • You function well in a team (5-7 people) and can communicate effectively and clearly (both verbally and in writing) with customers and your team members.
  • Comfortable with writing formal documentation (requirements, design, interfaces, and others). Familiarity with customers that require a more formal approach is a plus.
  • Experience with version management systems/source control (git), continuous integration (Jenkins/Gitlab), project management tools (Redmine), virtualization (VMs), and containerization (Docker).
  • Nice to haves:
  • Experience with Nix/NixOS or declarative programming.
  • Knowledge of Django, Jupyterlab, Terraform, Openstack.
  • Experience with front-end development and/or scientific visualisation.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English, and Dutch is a preference.
  • You are authorised to work in the Netherlands.

In addition, as a Software Engineer with a passion for cutting-edge software development, you are someone who:

  • Enjoys working in a team within a dynamic, high-tech organization.
  • Enjoys working with cloud infrastructure for scientific computing (especially within the field of Earth Observation data processing).
  • Can come up with their own solutions, and discuss and debate various options within the team.
  • Likes to guide and coach other team-members.
  • Can communicate clearly with (scientific) users and provide support to them.
  • Is accurate, self-learning, and able to think on a higher level of abstraction.
  • Also enjoys social interactions with colleagues.

Our story

At S[&]T we contribute to a safer life on earth by translating space data into valuable and actionable insights. We oversee data from instruments to application, and apply our expertise within our software frameworks, information products and consultancy.

Our society relies on space and scientific instruments for climate change monitoring, navigation, defence and national security, and other crucial services we all use in our daily lives. These instruments produce an enormous quantity of complex data, and our goal is to unlock its value.

We have more than 20 years of experience working on instrument calibration, the creation of data quality monitoring tools, the development of real-time data processing frameworks, and the development of application-specific algorithms. With this, we help organisations, governments and industries to strengthen their information position and thereby improve their decision making. We focus on the following domains: Space & Science, Defence & Security, Environment & Sustainability, and High-Tech Consulting.
