Mechanical Engineering Internship: Investigation on Quality Issues of Tools

Introduction

Within Machine Conditioning, our team's mission is to optimize the reliability, availability, serviceability, and cycle time of precision manufacturing equipment as it moves from the early development phase to operations at international customer sites. Our Manufacturing and Equipment Engineers make sure that all work instructions, diagnostics, tools, trainings and spare parts are available for the manufacturing and customer-support operational sectors.

Your Assignment

Within ASML there is always a high focus on quality. We would like to investigate current quality issues in the factory and service tools related to Machine Conditioning. The data is available, but a deep dive is needed to understand the issues.

Your initial tasks will include:

  • Review the whole population of tools related to Machine Conditioning;
  • Use the relevant data to determine if improvements can be made;
  • Take our departments' feedback loop and determine the top X items for improvements;
  • Take the top 2 or 3 items from that and analyze last years' material notifications (field & factory);
  • Find buckets (similar issues) in these notifications and determine where design or document improvements would be needed (if valid, split into Factory or Field);
  • Organize Gemba walks in the factory, talk with the operators, troubleshoot team and factory engineers about their main issues.

After analyzing current data and gathering inputs from field and factory, next steps will be:

  • Look for small adaptations which can gain time/availability (quick wins) during your investigation;
  • Look for structural improvements (redesign, changing our work instructions, etc);
  • Create a business case per issue and discuss it with your mentor;
  • When the improvement proposal is accepted and planned, get involved in the design phase and implementation of the solution;
  • Present all the outcomes half-way and at the end of your internship;

This is a Bachelor apprentice internship for around 5-6 months, working 4-5 days per week. The start date of this internship is as soon as possible, or at the latest around September 2025.

Your Profile

To be suitable for this internship you:

  • Are a Bachelor student in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field;
  • Have experience with Microsoft Office applications;
  • Are able to do independent research;
  • Have strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
