Master thesis Internship - Credit Analytics

At a glance

Do you get energy from creating data solutions? Are you able to convert complex problems into concrete and explainable data solutions? Are you a STEM student (e.g. Business Analytics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science etc.) looking to do your master thesis? Then we are looking for you! 😊

At ABN AMRO, our strategy is to be a personal bank in the digital age. We offer a fully digital banking experience while at the same time strengthening personal contact with our clients. The Credit Analytics team is part of the Financing Solutions (FS) product unit which has end-to-end responsibility for delivering lending products to all client segments. It is like the engine room of lending and offers advice, monitors credit status and offers appropriate credit solutions. FS provides exposures of over one million euros of a credit advice.

The Credit Analytics team is part of the Credit Data Grid, which is responsible for data quality, data distribution, data remediation and (advanced) data analytics within Financing Solutions. Together we work on several data projects aiming to make the credit domain (more) data driven. We collaborate a lot and help each other with data challenges, we all are eager to learn and develop ourselves. We work hybrid, team members work at least 2 days per week from our headquarters in Amsterdam.

We are looking for a STEM student thesis writer to help improve the data analytics and science capabilities of the Credit Analytics team. The work of the team includes data modelling and dashboarding to create insights from billions of rows of data and advanced analytics to identify, develop and implement data opportunities and solutions. You will work on the Credit Domain Data Store containing data from multiple sources including transaction, credit and customer data. This data is readily available. Possible projects or thesis subjects are:

  • Investigate the best solution to interpret documents and automate certain checks in the credit risk monitoring process, for example using LLM.
  • Investigate the best solution to derive critical information from unstructured data, this involves thousands of clients and millions of documents currently all being searched by hand. For example by using document intelligence or RAG.
  • Investigate how our value based pricing data science model can be optimized and return more accurate results (currently a regression model).

In this role, you will

  • Be part of a new, young but experienced team in data science (and the full data analytics cycle).
  • Perform data analysis and experiments, think about the value for end-users and create data solutions on the Credit Domain Data Store.
  • Support in the data science / advanced analytics life cycle: Ideation, data preparation, feature engineering, modelling, monitoring etc.
  • Transform (internal and external) raw data into working data solutions in close collaboration with the data/machine learning engineering team.
  • Work closely with business partners to ensure that the teams are able to leverage data across Financing Solutions.
  • Learn how it is to create workable data solutions: we work with Python, Pyspark, Azure ML, SQL and Power BI (we don’t expect you to be sufficient in all languages).

Your profile

  • Master student in STEM related field (e.g. Business Analytics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science etc.).
  • Entrepreneurial and innovative mindset.
  • Knowledge of major programming languages, preferably Python and SQL, and object oriented programming.
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms / packages (such as Scikit-learn, XGBoost etc.) and model explainability (e.g. SHAP). Knowledge of LLMs and RAG processes is a plus.
  • Knowledge of supervised and unsupervised classification methodologies.
  • Basic knowledge or willingness to learn the credit and banking domain.
  • Work independently in a complex, dynamic environment and be able to successfully complete data projects.

What we offer

  • Internship compensation of 750,- euro per month (based on 36 hours).
  • Freedom to get the most out of your talents, flexible working and room for development.
  • An opportunity to learn how banking and data analytics work together.
  • Laptop and necessary software are supplied.
