How do you make our customers happy?

By ensuring that every critical byte of data at bol is actively managed. As our Lead Data Management – Data Compliance, you’ll envision, implement, and safeguard the Data Management solutions that ensure our compliance with data regulation and safeguard our license to operate. Your expertise will be the cornerstone of bol’s strategy to ensure our data is secure and risks are properly managed.

The biggest challenge

At bol, data is considered a strategic asset. That brings unique responsibilities with it. We process vast amounts of sensitive data to drive business decisions and fuel innovations. This calls for robust data management capabilities to ensure both protection and accessibility. Success demands an effective data management processes that safeguards data while enabling its strategic use. You will need to develop and implement data management processes that address strict compliance requirements while supporting our rapid pace of innovation. This balance between protection and enablement makes the role both challenging and crucial to our future success. Data Management covers multiple subjects, that are on their own complicated and extensive. In order to make sure we do the right thing for bol, we need sufficient in-depth knowledge of the topics. The complexity of the subjects combined with the complexity of our organization and technical landscape, requires sufficient attention for all these angles.

What you'll do as Lead Data Management

Positioned in the central data department, you’ll be the go-to expert for data security, privacy and compliance subjects. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring these areas are clearly understood, properly implemented, and well maintained and monitored across bol. You are a thought leader, who has in-depth knowledge and is up-to-date with the latest developments in this field of expertise. You will translate complex (legal) requirements into practical, enterprise-wide solutions and you help business domains understand the needs and benefits. This function is successful if, for data security, privacy and compliance subjects, there is an efficient and effective implementation of data management capabilities that are properly maintainable and deliver demonstratable control of our data on these subjects.

As a key driver in your field of expertise, you will contribute to defining the data strategy and roadmap. You’ll continuously develop in-depth solutions for implementing data management topics across bol, translating legislation and policies into practical, company-wide standards and processes. For this you will collaborate with departments such as legal, risk, compliance and security. You will own the functional requirements for supporting tooling and collaborate closely with the Data Platform department for technical development. You will align implementations with relevant departments and business domains, monitor and maintain these implementations, and provide support across the organization as needed. You will lead a small team of colleagues, coaching and supporting their development. Key responsibilities include:

  • Functioning as a thought leader in security, privacy and compliance data management topics
  • Providing expert support and guidance across the organization
  • Managing direct reports’ performance, personal and professional development
  • Staying current with industry trends and technological advancements in the field
  • In-depth solution design for data security, privacy and compliance that include functional requirements, organizational and technical measures
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams (e.g., Data Platform, Security, Legal and Compliance) to ensure properly aligned and comprehensive approaches are designed

Why you can make a difference

You are a data person with a risk, legal and compliance mindset! Whether your background lies in data management, data legislation or something in between, you ‘talk data’ and inspire our stakeholders to adopt data management. With a bachelor’s or master’s degree and at least 7 years experience in data and compliance, you understand how to translate complex requirements into practical solutions. Expertise in data compliance related topics, such as GDPR and AI-Act, as well as knowledge of the DAMA principles is a must. You have a proven track record in making implementations that stick. Experience with leading people is nice to have, but the ambition to do so is a must.

  • Complexity amplifier Your communication style makes simple concepts seem utterly impenetrable. For that reason, you shy away from business counterparts, and much prefer the company of data-savvy peers.
  • Single perspective You can’t parse the complexity of our projects and overall technical landscape, and the breadth of our stakeholder landscape.
  • Only hard skills matter Whether it involves colleagues across the organization or team members, coaching people is not your forte.
  • Strategic Visionaire You understand how effective data management directly impact business results. Your frameworks don't just protect data—they balance the full potential of strategic decision-making and protection.
  • Compliance enabler You can transform regulatory requirements into business advantages. Your comprehensive governance frameworks ensure that compliance strengthens rather than constrains our ability to innovate and compete.
  • Risk manager You understand what risks are involved when dealing with data of customers and partners and you are exited to identify and control them.

This is where you'll work

You’ll be at the heart of bol’s data revolution, working from our headquarters in Utrecht. Your impact will ripple through every aspect of our operation, influencing how we serve our 13 million customers and support our 49,000 partner sellers. You’ll join a team of 2,900 innovators who are passionate about using data to revolutionize retail. At bol, we’ve been pushing boundaries since 1999, and with you in charge of our data foundation, we’re ready to leap into the AI-driven future of e-commerce. Welcome aboard!
