Enabler of enterprise data management practices

How do you make our customers happy?

By safeguarding and optimizing bol’s most valuable strategic asset: data. With 37 million articles, 49,000 commercial partners, and up to 800 orders processed per minute, bol’s data landscape is both vast and complex. As our Data Management Specialist, you’ll establish and maintain the frameworks that enable informed decision-making across our organization while ensuring compliance and security. Your work directly impacts our ability to innovate, optimize our operations, and deliver customer value through data-driven insights.

The biggest challenge

At bol, data is considered a strategic asset. That brings unique responsibilities with it. We process vast amounts of sensitive data to drive business decisions and fuel innovations. This calls for robust data management capabilities to ensure both protection and accessibility. Success demands an effective data governance framework that safeguards data while enabling its strategic use. You’ll need to develop and implement solutions that address strict compliance requirements while supporting our rapid pace of innovation. This balance between protection and enablement makes the role both challenging and crucial to our future success.

What you'll do as a Data Management Specialist

You will be a key player in our central data management department and instrumental in enabling data owners and stewards across several business domains to excel in their roles. You’ll build strong relationships with (data) domain experts, helping them establish and maintain best practices in data governance, compliance, and quality management. Your expertise will help shape how we manage data throughout its lifecycle.

In this role, you will work closely with Legal, IT Security, Risk & Compliance and business stakeholders to ensure data management solutions meet all requirements. Once the functional design (including processes and responsibilities) is sufficiently clear, you’ll help develop the technical solution, together with the data platform team. You’ll also coordinate with external stakeholders, including Ahold Delhaize, to align our data management practices with broader organizational standards. Current priorities include strengthening our data governance framework, enhancing compliance measures, and improving data quality across the organization. You’ll work with our data management platform (Collibra) to create clear pathways for data discovery and understanding. By monitoring the effectiveness of our data management practices, you ensure that we are in control of our data and you’ll identify and drive improvement initiatives that continually enhance our capabilities. Each Data Management Specialist is assigned specific focus areas. Depending on those, responsibilities and topics may include:

We look to you for data management expertise! Knowledge of one or more DAMA subjects is what we’re after. Of course, you’ll work closely with the business. You uncover the question behind the question, make solution proposals, think along about processes and process improvements, support users, and monitor the use and usability of the data management platform (Collibra). Apart from all the colleagues you support, you work with experts from various disciplines, including engineering, security, legal, risk, and compliance. Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Design and implement enterprise-wide data management solutions
  • Enable and empower data owners and stewards across all business domains through partnerships
  • Initiate and drive data compliance and quality initiatives
  • Monitor data management effectiveness to ensure we are in control of our data
  • Collaborate with Legal, Security, and Risk & Compliance on data security related topics
  • Team up with data platform teams to facilitate technical solution development
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders, including Ahold Delhaize, on data standards and practices

Why you can make a difference

You are a data person with a business mindset! Whether you’re a tech-savvy data engineer, an expert at data legislation or something in between, you ‘talk data’ and inspire our stakeholders to adopt data management. With a bachelor’s or master’s degree and (at least some) data management experience, you understand how to translate complex requirements into practical solutions. Experience with data governance, data compliance and/or data quality will significantly contribute to your ability to hit the ground running. Knowledge of DAMA principles and CDMP certification (or willingness to obtain it) is a must-have and the foundation for success in this role.

3 reasons why this is (not) for you

It it:

  • Strategic value creator
  • You understand how effective data management directly drives business results. Your frameworks don't just protect data—they unlock its full potential to improve decision-making, customer experiences, and operational efficiency.
  • Compliance enabler
  • You can transform regulatory requirements into business advantages. Your comprehensive governance frameworks ensure that compliance strengthens rather than constrains our ability to innovate and compete.
  • Quality impact driver
  • You can demonstrate how high-quality data translates into measurable business outcomes. Whether the business case is reducing operational costs, improving customer satisfaction, or accelerating time-to-market, your argument is clear and compelling.

It's not:

  • Single-track analyst
  • You're focused solely on data analysis, often missing the broader implications of data management.
  • Complexity amplifier
  • Your communication style makes simple concepts seem utterly impenetrable. For that reason, you shy away from business counterparts, and much prefer the company of data-savvy peers.
  • Quality compromiser
  • You see data inconsistencies as minor inconveniences rather than critical challenges requiring systematic solutions.

This is where you’ll work

You’ll join our Data Office, a cornerstone of bol’s data-driven future. As part of a platform serving 13 million customers and 49,000 partners, you’ll work alongside colleagues dedicated to keeping our data secure yet accessible to the right people. Our mission is to enable data-driven decision-making while ensuring the highest standards of data governance and protection. In this rapidly evolving environment, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping how we manage and leverage our most valuable strategic asset: data.
