Engineering Internships and Graduate Opportunities- 2025

Imagine your career taking you to the depths of innovation and the heights of impact. Our people enable continuous progress. Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond.

About Us:
SBM Offshore is the world’s deepwater ocean-infrastructure expert. Our work is already resulting in cleaner, more efficient energy production. True. Blue. Transition. is our promise to enable that into the future while at the same time using our expertise to support new and existing markets in the blue economy. It starts with Advancing our Core: continuing to advance the decarbonization of traditional energy production. While Pioneering More: helping to enable the energy transition and using our unique capabilities in ocean infrastructure to support more industries to grow sustainably. Sharing our experience for a better blue tomorrow.

At SBM we offer a variety of interesting Internship opportunities. If any of the below subjects are interesting to you please apply online and indicate in your cover letter your preferred topic.

Mechanical EquipmentTank cleaning concept
Short description: The assignment for an internship is to investigate and develop a state-of-the-art tank cleaning concept which addresses environmental issues as well as safety issues we are facing right now in our fleet. Each tank is to be inspected on a regular basis to ensure a safe operation for 25-30 years without going into drydock. Naval ArchitectureOptimization of FPSO operations
Short description: Enhance FPSO operations by gathering and analyzing operational statistics from SBM's fleet of FPSOs. Gather historical loading conditions of all FPSOs available in the digital SBM. Post-process loading conditions to derive key statistical insights. Utilize gathered insights to propose FPSO design improvements and optimize operational efficiency. ProcessStandard simulation for TEG Dehydration System
Short description: Comparison of Hysys & UniSim with ProMax results and past projects vendor H&MB and actual Operating Data. This standard simulation template can be used for future greenfield design simulations as well as operations can use this for troubleshooting. ProcessExplore use of Mysep for sizing purposes
Short description: Evaluation of Separator performance using MySep with impact of inlet line sizing and upstream control valve pressure drop; to evaluate SBM line sizing rules. ProcessEvaluate use of Relief tools (PSV plus) in Hysys
Short description: Evaluate use of Relief tools (PSV plus) in Hysys compared to existing way of working (SBM tools) and how this information can be linked with AVEVA. ProcessProcess systems GHG reduction options
Short description: Greenhouse Gas emission reduction options; comparing options (eductor, VRU, closed flare, etc.); being involved with Unity Greenhouse Gas Abatement study. ProcessAVEVA Engineering Collaborative Environment efficiency enhancement tools
Short description: Automate process input data to other disciplines, generate Lock register through AE, Evaluate benefit of using AVEVA diagram for PFD generation subsequently linking PFD to P&ID (HMB to Line list), Utilization of E3D to generate piping information for process calculations etc. ProcessExplore AI solutions for Process engineering deliverables
Short description: To be discussed with student how to explore AI opportunities and to come up with initiatives/idea's for SBM to consider for Engineering purposes. ProcessDevelop a process calculation tool to calculate Cargo Tank Vapour Space
Short description: Calculation tool to be developed for cargo vapour space considering H2S, BTEX and IG component concentrations as a function of cargo tank liquid level (i.e. requiring dynamic simulation) – useful for Process and Marine discipline. ProcessUpdate of Process Calculation Tools
Short description: Update existing process calculation tools like Line sizing calculation tool, pump sizing calculation tool, etc. ProcessEvaluate differences in ways of working of process activities / deliverables between different SBM execution centers.
Short description: main process activities / deliverables are standardized between all execution centers. Some ways of working were not needed to be standardized so far. This exercise is to map the available differences. ProcessCO2 calculations for various technologies
Short description: Development (further improvement) of CO2 calculations for various technology options like combined cycle etc. Control, Automation & Safety ManagementProcess controls & data mining
Short description: SBM operates FPSO’s with complex oil and gas processing systems. These systems require automated process control systems, which need to function reliably and accurately in order to limit the operating envelope of the process and equipment within the desired ranges. However, many controllers do not function as intended. This leads to excursions outside desired operating ranges and cause production stops which in turn lead to additional emissions on release of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere to maintain plant safety. There is a historic lack of feedback from operations back to the engineering phase, due to lack of sufficient data availability. However, new tools have been introduced recently to monitor process controller performances. These tools generate a lot of data, however, the large amount of data generated by these automated tools requires effort and skill to mine this data in order to generate conclusive evidence of the root cause of failures and mal-performance. While alternative measures are available to improve controller design and performance, lack of conclusive insights prevents the implementation of such measures to address the root causes. The role of an intern in the Control, Automation and Safety discipline within SBM Schiedam would be to familiarize with SBM FPSO operating processes, understand process controller performance metrics, get trained on publicly available Process controller performance monitoring tool such as SEEQ which generate the data, perform data mining of such data for a sample of such high priority controllers, and come up with conclusive insights which prove the evidence of the expected root causes to be the main cause of mal-performance, which in turn will allow SBM to determine the best alternative measures to be implemented into the controller design. This will allow SBM to produce more reliably leading to reduced emissions of greenhouse gases as a result. Safety & Loss PreventionStandardizing the deluge nozzle arrangement for equipment
Short description: Firewater deluge on equipment is applied using deluge nozzles. The required deluge rate is being calculated and suitable deluge nozzles are proposed for the design. In order to minimize range of different deluge nozzle types, a standardization is required. Safety & Loss PreventionGuideline for engineers using software Vessfire
Short description: Vessfire is used to simulate jetfire impingement on piping model and to identify if piping / flanges can withstand this as per minimum failure criteria. EnvironmentalEvaluation of Sustainability Initiatives.
Short description: An internal ranking tool was developed and used to evaluate and compare the different initiatives that were identified. This will be presented internally to determine which of the initiatives will require further development work. The primary objective of this internship is to further evaluate and develop these best ranked options taking into account all sustainability aspects. EnvironmentalFugitive emission
Short description: The primary objective of this internship project is to develop a versatile tool that can effectively estimate fugitive emissions from FPSOs and help manage their impact. This aligns with findings from IPCC reports indicating significant contributions of fugitive emissions to overall greenhouse gases in offshore operations (Source: IPCC, 2021, "Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis").
