As a Trainee at our Ship Management Department (SMD), you’re part of a dynamic and international team focused on building, maintaining, and improving the performance of our fleet. In this position, you’ll work on both newbuilds and modifications of ships and equipment. You will actively contribute to the design and engineering projects within the department, gaining practical knowledge and becoming increasingly independent in your role. The aim is to explore where your interests lie within SMD Technology and to make a significant contribution to the department’s growth and strategy. 🚢

YOUR IMPACT

In this role, you focus on new builds, contributing to the realization of new assets, equipment, or ships, as well as the maintenance and modification of existing ones. You will proactively contribute to projects, gaining extensive knowledge and ultimately working with increased autonomy. Working alongside engineers within SMD Technology, you will begin to take responsibility for specific parts of the scope. You will also explore where your interests lie within SMD Technology and what excites you about the work. Your contribution will help strengthen the team, ensuring continuity and supporting the department’s growth and strategy. Within SMD, the main goal is to ensure the Van Oord fleet operates at its best, ready for every challenge and project, with the continued readiness and cost-effectiveness of the fleet guaranteed. With increasingly challenging projects and a demanding business environment, your work will directly contribute to the ongoing success and development of the department.

In short, you will be involved in:

  • Support in new builds and modifications of assets, equipment, and ships
  • Proactively contribute to project work, gaining knowledge and autonomy
  • Collaborate with engineers and take responsibility for specific project scopes
  • Strengthen the team and support the growth of SMD Technology
  • Help ensure the optimal performance, cost, and readiness of the Van Oord fleet.

ABOUT YOU

  • Educational background (HBO/WO) preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering, or Aerospace
  • Participated in extracurricular activities is a plus
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving ability
