About us

The Workboats Division represents one of the four ship-newbuild domains of Damen Shipyards, alongside Offshore & Specialized Vessels, Yachting, and Naval. Workboats focuses on designing, engineering, building, and commissioning Workboats, such as High Speed Craft, Fast Ferries, Stationary Dredgers, and Tugs. The development of technology within the shipbuilding industry is increasing fast. Damen Workboats wants to be at the forefront of these developments and is constantly looking for new ways to develop, design, standardize, and optimize innovative systems. The Technology Management department of the division Workboats is responsible for technology development and standardization of the ship’s systems portfolio based on modular and scalable solutions. We are looking for a (jr.) Technology specialist for the system platform team “Electric & Hybrid Propulsion” in the Technology Management department. A system platform team is a multi-disciplinary team responsible for a so-called system platform. The system platform team handles the development, standardization, and maintenance of the entire (standard) system during its full life cycle, including technical content, supply chain, production, quality control, knowledge management, and documentation for in-service support. The system owner Electric & Hybrid Propulsion leads the system platform team and is accountable for the Electric & Hybrid Propulsion systems of the complete Workboats product portfolio. The system platform consists of the domains Power Distribution, Control & Energy management, Energy Storage, Power Generation & Consumers, and Shore Charging systems.

The role

As a (jr.) Technology specialist, you will be part of the Electric & Hybrid Propulsion System Platform team within the Damen division Workboats. With important themes such as Sustainability, Digital, and Autonomous operations that are part of the Damen DNA, it will be exciting times for the deck equipment team with lots of innovation and new designs to set the standard in the maritime industry. In this role, you will be responsible for the conceptual design of the Electric & Hybrid Propulsion system. You will be working on development with colleagues from different platforms like Main Machinery, IT on board, and suppliers. With your expertise, your task is to transform requirements into concepts and verify that concepts are delivering the requirements. As a Technology specialist, you are part of the technology development department and will report to the System Owner – Electric & Hybrid Propulsion.

Key accountabilities

In this exciting role you will be accountable for:
  • Responsible for the development of new technology and standardization of modular and scalable system families, variants, and options covering the needs of the complete Damen Workboats portfolio;
  • Manage concept development projects in a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Setting requirements for technology by considering business needs and market opportunities;
  • Converting requirements to functional and conceptual design with a team of Technology specialists/engineers;
  • Contributing to the engineering process by developing the required deliverables, such as system definition documents, specifications, functional descriptions, and system principles for modular engineering building blocks;
  • Contributing to the engineering process by supporting and reviewing the Engineering information;
  • Guide the development of technology with suppliers, partners by setting needs & requirements and reviewing the technical solutions;
  • Contribute to knowledge management by documenting knowledge in system principles, instructions, and trainings;
  • Advise and support the Product platform teams with selection and implementation of the technology into the ship types product portfolio;
  • Perform FMEA analysis, HAZID studies, and arrange class approval;
  • Write detailed test and validation plan to ensure compliance with regulations and to validate the requirements during simulation and testing;

Skills & experience

  • Willing to travel (based in The Netherlands).
You have:
  • An academic level with a bachelor and/or master’s degree in a technical direction, e.g., Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Process Automation, or Electrical Engineering, or another technical study that involves integration of complex systems.
  • Demonstratable knowledge in this specific technical domain in a relevant industry.
  • Experience with the application of Systems Engineering principles.
  • Experience with the development and integration of (marine) installations, including cooperation with third parties.
  • Experience with (marine) industry standards and regulations.
  • You have a high-quality consciousness and accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills in English, Dutch is a plus.
