Job title: Degree Apprentice – Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) Professional

What you’ll be doing

BAE Systems Land design and manufacture a wide range of munitions products. It is essential that our products are high quality and conform to the customer’s requirements. As an Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Professional Apprentice you will be responsible for safely participating in the research, design, development, testing and manufacture of our range of munitions products.

You will study for a Degree in OME that covers a wide range of disciplines and allows you to specialise as you progress through your apprenticeship. Possible future roles include product design engineer, energetic materials scientist or process engineer. Whatever path you take will be wide-ranging and have both practical and theoretical elements. You will be a multi-disciplined engineer, with knowledge of a wide range of energetic materials.

Specific activities could include:

  • Working closely within the Energetics and Engineering Teams at Glascoed.
  • Attending block release at university to study for academic elements of apprenticeship.
  • Ensuring there is a detailed Safe System of Work in place for the work you develop.
  • Planning and subsequent delivery of research, development and engineering trials.
  • Design and development of new and existing munitions.
  • Taking the opportunity to assist in Continuous Improvement projects.
  • Planning, carrying out and reporting results from Test and Evaluation trials.
  • Compiling technical data to support design approval.
  • Specifying and designing new manufacturing plant and equipment then ensuring it is correctly installed and validated.
  • Supporting the Manufacturing Team in resolving any issues that may arise during production.
  • Gaining experience in placements outside engineering such as production, explosive testing and analytical laboratories.

What qualification will you get?

The degree you will study for is an Apprenticeship in Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The academic learning will be by block release at The University of Wales Trinity St David (Swansea) and include Fridays. Apprentices are required to supply their own laptop for university work. University travel and expenses will be covered by the business.

Export Control / Security:

These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.

Qualification requirements

5 GCSE A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent) Including Maths, English & Science or Technical Subject

A minimum of 96 UCAS Tariff Points (240 point old system) (excluding UCAS points gained at AS level) achieved from either:

  1. 3 A levels at grade C or above. One subject must be Maths and one subject must be in Engineering, Science or a Technical subject
  2. An Engineering based L3 Extended BTEC Diploma (which meets the required UCAS points) or equivalent.
