Export Controls Director

In this position as Export Controls Director (ECD), you will serve as the First Point of Contact for HQ functions (e.g., Global Supply Chain (GSC), Information Technologies (IT), Global Engineering, Research & Development, Group Treasury, Indirect Tax), factories, and markets for all strategic and technical questions related to trade restrictions arising from international sanctions and export controls regulations (e.g., EU, CH, U.S., UK). This includes determining import and export restrictions applicable to goods and software, export control classification codes, exporter status, and de minimis calculations under U.S. rules. In this position, you will be part of the JTI Sanctions & Export Controls team within HQ Legal.

Position:

In this role, you will:

  • Be the First Point Of Contact on trade compliance (export, import, transit, in-country transfer), advising on international sanctions and export controls regulations including EU Dual Use Regulation and US Export Administration Regulation, conducting trade compliance assessments, and supporting with export control classifications and calculation of U.S. content, working closely with Global Engineering, Indirect Tax, GSC, IT, and JTI suppliers).
  • Provide proactive assessments and update on new trade restrictions to ensure compliance with the ever-changing international sanctions and export controls regulations.
  • Provide recommendations and lead the development and implementation of new policies and measurable process improvements in the area of trade compliance.
  • Assist factories and business functions with trade assessments of specific projects (e.g., product launches), including export classification determination/validation of goods (hardware, software, technology) and services, and license requirements and applications.
  • Assist global and local IT teams with roll-out of new software and digital solutions to ensure compliance with applicable sanctions and export controls.
  • Develop governance model in relation to trade compliance, with clear ARCI between factories and different HQ functions (e.g., GSC, Indirect Tax).
  • Map business flows involving sanctioned countries.
  • Lead JTI efforts to automate trade management and transaction screening, e.g., with SAP GTS or similar tools.
  • Develop, maintain, and update specific global and local export control compliance policies and procedures.
  • Assess and deliver training aids and export control tools, including manuals, brochures, handouts, and web-based materials.

Requirements:

  • University degree and similar work experience in Supply Chain organizations.
  • At least 5 years working in a multinational company with experience in customs and export controls, classifying products according to US/EU/CH and other export control regulations (e.g., EAR, EU dual-use regulations, etc.) or similar experience.
  • Experience with SAP GTS or similar Global Trade Management tools and a strong background in implementing processes and controls in matrix organizations. Legal and International Trade background is a plus.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Highly proficient with MS Office.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Proactive, strong sense of urgency, analytics skills.
