Do you want to graduate within a Technical company in the maritime industry?

Royal IHC designs, constructs and delivers solutions for dredge systems in both new built and existing ships. Throughout these dredge systems, specially designed gate valves are used to regulate and direct the flow of the dredge slurry. One of the most critical positions in which gate valves are used, are in hull inlet positions. For the gate valves in these positions, special approval from classification bureaus is required. This approval must be renewed periodically. These renewal periods also allow for new design iterations to be developed.

The current Royal IHC Standard Dredge Gate Valve design requires updating and improving on several key aspects to stay ahead of the competition. Past research initiatives have come up with separate recommendations regarding different aspects of approval applicable to the gate valve design. A number of customized designs also exist based on client requests and experiences.

One of the strong selling points of the Royal IHC Dredge Gate Valve is that all new standard designs are interchangeable with older IHC Dredge Gate Valves within the dredge systems.

What are your ideas for a new innovative design? We will use your design to build our new Gate Valves.

Assignment

Design and engineer a new design gate valve which retains the interchangeability with older designs in existing dredge systems, based on classification requirements and feedback from different stakeholders. During the assignment, you will be working closely with different departments within Royal IHC, such as Engineering, production, and supply chain.

This assignment concerns a detailed design approach towards improving an existing product, with the goal of providing a new, workable design that can be submitted for approval by classification. To do this you will have the follow responsibilities:

  • Analyze the current design, stakeholder feedback (including supplier, client, in-house production and interdepartmental engineering), past research results and competitor designs.
  • Research feasibility of design improvements (including production methods, durability and future proofness), classification requirements and integration in the wider dredge system.
  • Design a new and improved dredge gate valve which is interchangeable with the current design as much as possible.
  • Realize production methods and requirements for the new design gate valve, as well as boundary conditions for directly connected systems.
  • Advice Royal IHC on the benefits of your new design and future developments or points of interest in the design and development of its gate valve designs and connected systems.

Your Profile

In order to be able to discuss and inform the organization and colleagues of the developments and initiatives of this internship, one must be a curious, confident and self-driven individual. As a graduate student, you will be capable of taking the initiative when carrying out your duties. To be eligible for this position you must have:

  • A Higher vocational education (HBO) study focused on Mechanical Engineering (Werktuigbouwkunde), Luchtvaarttechnologie or Shipbuilding (or equivalent).
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both verbal and written.
  • You are proactive and curious.
  • You come up with the new ideas and will retrieve the information from different departments.
  • You are not afraid to ask questions and want to get to the bottom of everything.
  • You are able to consider input from different stakeholders and you are able to determine where the priorities lie.

We offer

We ensure that you can work independently during your graduation internship. You can check all required competences with us and you are given the freedom to shape the graduation assignment as you see fit.

  • This internship offers you a monthly salary of €350,- based on a full-time week.
  • Reimbursement of your travel costs.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work partially from home.
  • A great opportunity to contribute to the future of the maritime industry.
