Boskalis, a leading offshore contractor, is dedicated to sustainable and environmentally responsible operations. Offshore construction activities like pile driving are crucial for developing infrastructure such as offshore wind farms and oil and gas platforms, but they generate significant underwater noise that can harm marine life. Marine organisms rely on sound for essential functions like communication and navigation, and elevated noise levels can disrupt these behaviors, impacting marine ecosystems.

To tackle this issue, Boskalis has implemented innovative noise mitigation techniques, including bubble curtains, cofferdams, and acoustic screens, to reduce underwater noise during pile driving. This MSc assignment will investigate the comparative behavior of these noise mitigation systems, focusing on their working principles, design factors, and modeling methods. The study aims to optimize these systems to improve efficiency and reduce uncertainty in mitigating offshore piling noise, leveraging Boskalis' expertise and commitment to sustainable offshore projects. The insights gained will help design and implement more effective noise mitigation strategies in future offshore construction projects.

To gain more knowledge on the comparative behavior of various noise mitigation systems around the monopile, the following research questions need to be investigated in more detail:

  • What are the fundamental working principles of different noise mitigation systems, such as ADBM, HSD, sleeve and SBC?
  • How does the performance of different noise mitigation systems compare under similar conditions?
  • What are the key factors driving the design and implementation of more effective noise mitigation strategies in offshore construction projects?
  • What methods can be used to model the behavior of these noise mitigation systems, both experimentally and numerically?
  • How can these noise mitigation systems be optimized to better suit various circumstances in offshore construction projects?

We offer
