Financial Crime Risk Management Leadership Role

This role will be part of the leadership team of the BUK Retail 1st line of defence financial crime risk management team within Product Operations and Control. The role holder will lead a team of 30 experienced, SME colleagues responsible for:

  • Reviewing and making decisions on the most complex cases impacting BUK Retail from a financial crime perspective. This will include, but will not be limited to, decisions to exit customer accounts;
  • Ensuring that the right outcomes on the above are reached through engaging with a wide range of stakeholders (including BUK ExCo members), colleague training, quality control, and capacity planning;
  • Working with partners in BX (mainly TC01) to provide assurance on financial crime outcomes reached on financial crime cases worked in transaction monitoring, due diligence, court order, and screening processes.
  • Working collaboratively with other colleagues in the 1st line of defence team, Chief Controls Office, and 2nd line of defence to support across the full range of financial crime risk management activities.

Key Capabilities

  • Leadership of large teams working in a regulated environment (for example leading teams working on complaints, financial support, fraud, financial crime, etc.) including colleague development, quality control, resource planning, capacity forecasting, and delivering against agreed service levels.
  • Experience in handling complex cases requiring judgmental decisions where engagement with a range of stakeholders (including legal, compliance, media, public relations, etc.) is required.
  • Good awareness of financial crime risk management.
  • Capability in providing oversight of outcomes in outsourced (either internally or externally) operations and driving improved standards through outcome testing, oversight, and relationship management.

Purpose of the Role

To support the Risk Function in delivering its objective of safeguarding the bank's financial and operational stability by proactively identifying, assessing, mitigating, and monitoring risks across various business units and activities.

Accountabilities

  • Development of strategic direction for risk, including the implementation of up-to-date methodologies and processes.
  • Management of the risk department, including oversight of risk colleagues and their performance, implementation of risk priorities and objectives, oversight of department efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Relationship management of risk stakeholders, including identifying relevant stakeholders and maintenance of the quality of external third-party services.
  • Adherence to the Risk policy, standards and frameworks, and maintaining a robust control environment.

Director Expectations

  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function-wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate, and enable resourcing, budgeting, and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalate breaches of policies/procedures appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed, and that relevant processes are in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division/Group to achieve overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector/functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments/initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/business divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
