Job Description: Project Manager for Sentinel-1 Projects

Join the Earth Observation Projects Department at ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands as a Project Manager for the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-1 Next Generation Projects in the Copernicus Space Segment Programme.

About the Sentinel-1 Mission

The Sentinel-1 mission includes four satellites. The first two were launched in 2014 and 2016. The latter two are scheduled for launch in Q4 2024 and 2025. The upcoming Sentinel-1 Next Generation mission will advance the project by replacing the Sentinel-1 C&D satellites, ensuring continuity beyond 2030 and introducing enhancements. Presently, the mission has completed its Phase A/B1, with Phase B2/C/D set to begin around mid-2025.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Copernicus Space Segment Programme Manager, you will manage the protoflight and implementation of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-1 Next Generation Projects (Phases B2/C/D/E1). Your duties include:

  • Overseeing the procurement and technical management of the projects within agreed specifications, cost, and schedule.
  • Managing industrial contracts and liaising with industry stakeholders on project matters.
  • Representing the projects to ESA authorities and various mission groups and delegate bodies.
  • Overseeing and supporting the ESA Project Teams and ensuring efficient information dissemination.
  • Managing health and safety risks within your area.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of space system development and PA standards
  • Experience in space projects, including instrumentation and operations
  • Understanding of ESA and industrial development, verification, and procurement processes
  • Experience with industrial costs and scheduling
  • Proven track record in complex project deliveries on time and budget

Educational Requirements

A master’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline is required.
