  • working closely with students and NGOs aiming at defending fundamental rights?

Then, the function of Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Amsterdam is just the thing for you!

What are you going to do?

At the Amsterdam Law School, students are offered an Experiential Learning programme unique in the Netherlands. Each Master’s programme includes courses from the Amsterdam Law Practice (ALP), asking students to apply their knowledge of the law to real-world questions and reflect on this experience. The law clinics, known as the Amsterdam Law Clinics (ALC), comprise eight different thematic legal clinics, such as the Business & Human Rights Clinic and the Fair Trials Clinic. Students work on real cases for clients and participate in interactive workshops/seminars.

We are looking for a Clinical Teaching Fellow with experience in human rights and clinical and academic legal education. An ideal candidate is a law graduate with experience as a legal practitioner. The Clinical Teaching Fellowship offers an exceptional opportunity to engage with legal practice and work in academia.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow is part of the Amsterdam Law Clinics team and will support the Director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics in teaching seminars and other related tasks. The specific tasks may change due to curriculum updates and project availability, but the main responsibilities include:

  • heading the Fair Trials Clinic
    • supervising students involved in monitoring criminal cases against human rights defenders and journalists in Türkiye;
  • publishing law journal articles in relation to clinical education (with the Director);
  • assisting in organizing events (e.g., expert meetings, roundtables, panel discussions);
  • performing administrative tasks, including funding applications and external communications;
  • working as part of a team.

What do you bring?

We seek someone passionate about education and law who wants to contribute to forming the next generation of lawyers. You have:

  • a law degree with an outstanding record;
  • at least three years of experience in legal practice or human rights work;
  • strong organizational and communication skills;
  • excellent command of English and Dutch, both verbal and written;
  • a commitment to working intensively with students.

The following background and interests are encouraged and a plus:

  • prior teaching experience;
  • knowledge of and experience in the field of human rights;
  • engagement with civil society.

What do we offer?

We offer an employment contract for one year, starting November 1st, 2024, ranging between 0.6 and 0.8 fte.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience at the start of the contract, ranges between €3,345 to €5,278 gross per month for a 38-hour work week. This excludes the 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. Partial remote work is optional.
