What are you going to do?

French is taught in a range of programmes to students with different proficiency levels and different educational goals. The department Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures has a vacancy for a suitably experienced lecturer to teach language proficiency courses in French to these students, helping them to master the language in support of their educational programme objectives.

You will teach a curriculum that has already been developed, but also contribute to further improving education in the broad field of additional language acquisition of French and identify opportunities for improvement. You can be deployed on a broad range of educational duties for the various courses in French and teach inspiring lectures and seminars. In addition, your educational duties will include supervising theses and contributing to innovations and improvements of the curriculum across the entire department of Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the lecturer or senior lecturer, you will be teaching at the French Language and Culture department, which will include teaching in the field of language acquisition courses plus other content courses, depending on your expertise;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
  • marking (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
  • coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • supervising theses and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships).

What do you have to offer?

You are experienced in teaching French as an additional language to learners from a range of prior educational backgrounds and experience. You are able to teach language acquisition courses to students who specialise in French language and culture, as well as to students who take French as part of another programme, such as European Studies or Linguistics

Your experience and profile

Candidates need to have the following qualifications:

  • you have an academic degree in a relevant discipline at least as Master’s level;
  • you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);

you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;

you are able to teach in English.

What can we offer you?

We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 34 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
