The French Department is looking for a candidate to teach in the Bachelor French Language and Culture, as well as courses for second language acquisition in other degree programmes. The candidate has expertise in teaching various components of a French university curriculum to students who study French as an additional language.

What are you going to do?

The French Language and Culture programme, together with other language programmes, is at the crossroads of reconceptualization in the context of the sector plans for language education in the Netherlands. Various initiatives to rethink the programme are ongoing, while the existing programmes and students already enrolled for these programmes need to be taught throughout this period. We are looking for an enthusiastic lecturer to maintain existing courses and ensure a meaningful educational experience for the students in the existing programmes, while contributing to the development of new programmes.

You will be teaching literature, culture and film courses, as well as language acquisition courses, in the Bachelor’s programme in French Language and Culture. Your educational duties will also include supervising theses.

Tasks and responsibilities

Teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;

  • supervising Bachelor’s theses;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying opportunities for improvement;
  • making contributions to the development and implementation of improvements in didactics and/or content of the designated curriculum;
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • performing management duties;
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties.

What do you have to offer?

You have experience in a range of literature and culture courses in French university programmes, through the medium of French, and are also able to teach French language acquisition courses to beginners using Dutch and/or English as bridging language in the early phases.

Your experience and profile

  • PhD education or higher in French or applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language education with specialisation in French;
  • experience with teaching in BA programmes at an academic level;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the French;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • appropriate administrative experience and skills;
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment;

good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within the first two years of employment and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed.

What can we offer you?

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 4,332 to € 5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
