About these roles

Full time, 3 days a week onsite together in either our London, Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester Digital Hubs and flexible 2 days remote wherever

A BT Product Design Principal

You’ll balance a rigorous user-centric perspective with the ability to make bold decisions and help the team deliver world-class digital experiences in a fast-paced environment. Being a highly senior practitioner of Product Design, you will not only be expected to deliver work of the highest caliber but also help to foster cross-functional and cross-departmental collaboration and consistency by working closely with the Product Designers, Product Design Managers and other Design disciplines, as well as forge relationships with Product Owners, Engineers and stakeholders to shape the vision and help define the roadmap for the ongoing optimisation our product experiences.

The 3 Product Design Principal roles

We currently have 3 specific positions open within the unit, each requiring it’s own specific area of expertise.

#1 Ecommerce App Expert

  • Youare a proven App ecommerce product design expert and will have evidence to support this. (Think Amazon, Nike, Tesco, M&S, John Lewis etc)
  • What you will be working onCovering all EE App (&Web) ecommerce, checkout, rewards & new verticals to meet our CEO’s app-first ambition of winning a space on our users home screens.
  • Your role – will be a True Master Craftsperson. Someone that can create app UI at amazing speed and with unbelievable quality.
  • Not a direct leader of people, but a leader by doing and creating, showing the future and pushing the boundaries, while also ensuring the world class quality we expect makes it to the live experience, not just concepts.
  • You may have held a head of design role in the past, but are solely focused on creating the best experiences (rather than creating the best design team) and love solely focusing on the IC (individual contributor) part of the Senior Designer role.
  • How you will be successful – Within a year you will have helped us produce the best performing ecommerce app journeys in the UK.
  • Your key metrics of success will be CRV (Conversation rates of sales journeys) metrics and DCSAT (Digital customer satisfaction) metrics.

#2 Daily-use App/ Service Expert

  • You are a proven App-first in-life experience product design expert and will have evidence to support this. (Think Uber, Deliveroo, Spotify, Google Home etc)
  • What you will be working onCovering all in-life service experiences, from using our services & subscriptions, to controlling your life, and linking via your family/friends accounts etc.. to meet our CEO’s app-first ambition of winning a space on our users home screens.
  • Your role – will be a True Master Craftsperson. Someone that can create app UI at amazing speed and with unbelievable quality.
  • Not a direct leader of people, but a leader by doing and creating, showing the future and pushing the boundaries, while also ensuring the world class quality we expect makes it to the live experience, not just concepts.
  • You may have held a head of design role in the past, but are solely focused on creating the best experiences (rather than creating the best design team) and love solely focusing on the IC (individual contributor) part of the Senior Designer role.
  • How you will be successful – Within a year you will have significantly increased daily use of our EE app through engaging interactions and moments of sensory delight that meet real user needs and truly improve peoples lives.
  • Your key metrics of success will be DAU/MAU (daily/monthly active user) metrics and DCSAT (Digital customer satisfaction) metrics.

#3 Startup, Digital Marketing & Brand/Design system Expert

Youare a proven App-& Web in-life experience product design expert and will have evidence to support this. (Think Agency background + startup experience)

  • You love fast paced experimentation, creating beautiful marketing-led experiences while ensuring they are user centred, but also driving efficient systematisation via a world class design system beneath it all that goes beyond buttons, to motion choreography and even sensory feedback like audio & haptic feedback.
  • What you will be working onCovering all GTM Tribe, Web& App (Loop/Global elements) & Co-create Tribe experiments to meet our CEO’s app-first ambition of winning a space on our users home screens.
  • Your role – will be a True Master Craftsperson. Someone that can create app & web UI at amazing speed and with unbelievable quality.
  • Not a direct leader of people, but a leader by doing and creating, showing the future and pushing the boundaries, while also ensuring the world class quality we expect makes it to the live experience, not just concepts.
  • You may have held a head of design role in the past, but are solely focused on creating the best experiences (rather than creating the best design team) and love solely focusing on the IC (individual contributor) part of the Senior Designer role.
  • How you will be successful – Driving efficiency and alignment via the design system and its component usage. (using metrics of adoption). Driving experimentation in the co-create tribe via Lean startup concepting to prove/disprove hypothesis around new product ideas.

You'll have the following accountabilities

  • Supports and actively drives the realisation of the product experience vision across the design team, ensuring that we are aligning to our experience principles and the relevant brands.
  • Operates as an SME within own field of expertise, providing advanced expertise in all aspects of end[1]to-end experience design, including using storyboards, journey maps, flow diagrams, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high[1]fidelity designs.
  • Oversees the delivery of world-class, digital-first experiences that achieve commercial goals, such as increased digital channel share, and have clear commercial impact in line with global-first practices, accessibility, and inclusive principles.
  • Collaborates with other roles including product owners, researchers, content designers, service designers and engineers to contribute to high-level strategic decisions, as well as envision and execute impactful product experiences globally.
  • Leads large scale, complex design activities, taking a lead in a strategically important area and executing on an experience, a product line and/or many products.
  • Leads design workshops and sprints with cross functional teams to explore innovative solutions for problems and opportunities identified through research and data.
  • Leads the implementation of continuous improvement opportunities to improve the design team processes, such as through exploration of new design tools.
  • Mentors and coaches experienced professionals to develop current and future team capabilities and ensure performance.
  • Advocates for product design that’s iterative, research-based, data-informed, and focused on customers’ needs.
