Your team

You will be part of the Market Innovation and Integration Division in the Directorate General Market Infrastructure and Payments. Our Directorate General works to ensure that Europe’s financial markets can rely on safe and efficient payments and market infrastructures, while embracing innovation and fostering European integration. The main responsibilities of our Directorate General are (i) coordinating and supporting the operation of market infrastructure for payments and securities settlement under the TARGET Services, (ii) interacting with market stakeholders to promote innovation and harmonisation of payments and securities settlement practices, and (iii) overseeing the Eurosystem market infrastructures and the overall payments ecosystem.

The Market Innovation and Integration Division is at the forefront of wholesale and retail payments, securities settlement and collateral management, working towards integrated, safe and efficient payments and post-trade services in Europe. We closely monitor market, business and policy developments in these areas, as well as new challenges such as crypto-assets and stablecoins. We also explore the application of distributed ledger technologies in financial market infrastructures. The Division liaises with market participants, European institutions, international bodies and European national central banks. We pro-actively foster European integration and work towards creating a level playing field and promoting efficiency in the area of payments, post-trade and related services.

We are recruiting trainees for two different teams in the Division; one team is working on securities and collateral and the other team is working on payments.

Your role

As a trainee you will:

• contribute to fostering harmonisation, integration and innovation in euro area financial markets;
• help monitor the compliance of financial market stakeholders with market standards and shape the EU regulatory framework in this field;
• help organise external events related to market infrastructures and payments;
• contribute to drafting notes on analytical/research projects and policy topics;
• help prepare presentations to relevant working groups and committees, ECB decision-making bodies and market fora;
• research, collect, store, manage and share data, information and documentation in your area of responsibility and explore new approaches, proposing creative ways to address technical questions.

The traineeship offers you excellent opportunities to learn about financial market infrastructures and contribute to the Eurosystem’s tasks in this field. You will gain insight into the latest market developments and the challenges the industry faces, as well as how market integration can help overcome these challenges. You will also learn how market fragmentation can be mitigated through careful policy formulation in collaboration with regulators and the industry.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

• a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics, business administration, econometrics, programming, computer science, engineering, finance, a related quantitative discipline (e.g. mathematics or physics), auditing, communication, law (with specialisation in the area of financial markets) or a similar field;
• an excellent knowledge of the MS Office package;
• an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

• a master’s degree in economics, finance, law or political science with specialisation in the area of financial markets;
• knowledge and/or experience of the functioning of financial markets and financial market infrastructures, i.e. payment instruments, payment services, payment systems, securities settlement infrastructures, central securities depositories, central counterparties, post-trade processing and collateral management;
• experience in drafting reports, briefings or analytical notes in English;
• experience in collecting, transforming, cleaning and analysing data by using data processing tools (e.g. Excel, VBA, Python, R, SQL and Stata) and the ability to present complex material clearly and concisely to different audiences;
• experience in visualising data, including using different visualisation techniques, formats (e.g. charts, maps and dashboards) and tools (e.g. Power BI and Tableau) to present information visually in a clear and effective way.

You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. Further information

Initial traineeship of between three and six months, with a possible extension to up to 12 months in total in the Market Innovation and Integration Division or another Division in the Directorate General Market Infrastructure and Payments, subject to performance and organisational needs. The start date will be from 1 September 2026 onwards.
