The pursuit of a professional path is frequently a narrative of transformation and self-discovery, where individuals embark on a journey to not only build their careers but also uncover new aspects of themselves. To shed light on what motivates and directs early-career professionals, we’ve conducted insightful interviews with individuals who are navigating their career paths in diverse industries.

In this interview, we introduce you to Yol Tio, a former Chemistry student who transitioned into the realm of Project Management at Ormit Talent. He shares his experiences, insights, and the distinctive culture that sets Ormit apart. Join us in exploring his journey as he delves into the world of data, technology, and professional growth.

What did you do before joining Ormit Talent?

Before joining Ormit Talent, I pursued a degree in Chemistry with a focus on Sustainability at the University of Amsterdam. Simultaneously, I served as the chair of the board for the study association for all chemistry students in Amsterdam. During my Master’s program, I came to realize that the existing technological solutions to our global climate challenges will only be effective if they are embraced by people and society. Recognizing the limitations of my technical Chemistry master’s program in providing these skills, I chose to apply to Ormit Talent. This decision allowed me to participate in an intensive development program, featuring training, coaching, and a multitude of new work experiences geared toward enhancing my soft skills and learning the art of motivating people to take action.

How has your experience been in your current role?

Up to this point, I’ve had the chance to explore roles in both a large tech company like ASML and a smaller organization like Ormit Talent. While undertaking significant responsibilities in both positions, these projects allowed me to learn more about myself and grow as a professional. The diverse dynamics within these companies have provided an ideal setting to put into practice what I learned during training, coaching, and discussions with other trainees.

Both assignments entailed diverse day-to-day responsibilities. At ASML, my role involved a lot of writing and editing communication content, while as a sustainability consultant, I led the delivery of the annual sustainability report and the development of the strategic roadmap for the upcoming year. Both positions required me to brainstorm and collaborate with various stakeholders to assess our current efforts, results, and potential improvements.

What has been your experience working for Ormit Talent?

What makes Ormit Talent stand out is the personal touch they provide. There is no one-size-fits-all development plan; instead, they focus on my strengths and weaknesses to facilitate improvement both professionally and personally. Together with my Talent Development Manager and fellow pool members, who have become my friends, I embarked on a two-year journey marked by personal growth and valuable work experience. I had the opportunity to apply the training and coaching at several prominent companies, such as ASML, Rabobank, or BAM, while also building a significant network and enjoying various social activities like parties, sailing, and ski trips.

What did you want to know before you started working as a Project Management Trainee at Ormit Talent?

Firstly, the process of learning is not always fun! The most profound lessons often come from making mistakes and stepping out of your comfort zone, which, although challenging, is precisely what Ormit Talent encourages. Secondly, (Project) Management is much more about stakeholder management than having the perfect solution. The realization here is that the obstacle to achieving the desired impact is rarely the solution itself but often the people who need to support it. This firsthand discovery is a unique aspect of the experience at Ormit Talent.
