Are you passionate about connecting with researchers and internal users, understanding their needs, and helping turn those insights into meaningful improvements across Elsevier’s Science, Technology, and Medical, Journals (STMJ) division through innovation delivery?

Ready to take on a new challenge in one of the most exciting and fast-moving fields of today, Generative Artificial Intelligence?

About our Team

Elsevier’s Science, Technology, and Medical, Journals (STMJ) division manages an extensive collection of 2000+ journals. The central Customer Experience & Innovation (CE&I) team within STMJ are experts in key strategic and operational areas, and together with our partners across the business, we identify, analyze, and respond to the needs of researchers and clinicians. We do this by combining deep data-driven strategic insights with innovative solutions. Our test and learn approach results in best practices allowing STMJ to develop trusted publishing venues and provide a smooth, effective, and collaborative customer experience.

About the Role

We are looking for a Generative AI Innovation and Delivery Manager to join the Customer-Centric Innovation Center of Expertise (CoE) in CE&I. The CoE facilitates innovation across the business and has a mission to advance science with solutions that add value to customers. Starting with deep customer insights, the CoE drives and supports strategic innovation by identifying opportunities, defining best practices, and guiding piloting and implementation efforts to enhance the experiences of authors, editors, and reviewers and support operational effectiveness.

The Innovation and Delivery Manager will play a pivotal role in delivering Elsevier’s Generative AI initiatives within STMJ. The role focuses on leading the delivery of end-to-end GenAI initiatives, with an emphasis on improving complex processes, building deep domain expertise, and increasing STMJ’s capacity to execute high-impact AI initiatives.

The role will contribute to the operational execution of the GenAI strategy by mapping, redesigning, and optimizing workflows to embed GenAI capabilities at scale. Working across STMJ and adjacent functions, the role will coordinate experimentation and delivery activities, and support the transition of initiatives toward adoption, ensuring work is executed effectively, responsibly, and with measurable impact.

The role will report to the Head of Innovation Projects. The role will work closely with other core members of the Innovation Center of Expertise, in particular the Director of Generative AI and the GenAI Policy and Governance Manager, as well as with other stakeholders across STMJ, Operations, A&G, and Technology to support aligned and effective delivery of Generative AI initiatives.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain a strategic overview of Generative AI opportunities, use cases, and enabling capabilities across STMJ, identifying areas where AI can deliver meaningful customer and business impact.
  • Conduct ongoing strategic intelligence on competitive, industry, and technological developments in Generative AI relevant to scholarly publishing workflows and internal operations.
  • Lead and coordinate selected GenAI innovation initiatives, including experiments, tests, and pilots, with a strong focus on learning, feasibility, and value validation.
  • Map, redesign, and optimize workflows to explore and embed GenAI capabilities, improving efficiency, scalability, and decision-making within innovation and discovery contexts.
  • Develop clear business cases and value hypotheses for GenAI initiatives, including feasibility considerations, cost-benefit analysis, and risk assessment to support prioritization decisions.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure innovation efforts progress smoothly from discovery toward readiness for adoption, minimizing friction between experimentation and operationalisation.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert in Generative AI delivery and application, providing practical insight to inform experimentation, governance discussions, and solution design, while working closely with specialist roles across policy, UX research, and technology.

Experience and skills

  • Substantial experience working with Generative AI and AI-enabled technologies, including hands-on involvement with AI tools, platforms, and experimentation environments.
  • Strong understanding of how AI capabilities can be applied within complex workflows, with demonstrated experience improving, redesigning, or scaling processes using technology and data science.
  • Experience operating in innovation, discovery, or experimentation contexts, with the ability to translate emerging ideas into structured pilots and validated solutions.
  • Solid understanding of the scholarly publishing ecosystem, with insight into the needs and challenges of authors, editors, reviewers, and internal operational teams.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical and conceptual ideas clearly to a wide range of audiences, including non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with experience working effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive, curious mindset with a strong drive for innovation, continuous improvement, and responsible adoption of new technologies.
