Providing a secure, repeatable platform to allow teams to deploy to the cloud

How do you make our customers happy?

By creating a frictionless cloud experience for our engineering teams. As part of Team Cloud Provisioning, you’ll develop, maintain, and occasionally redesign the provisioning product our application teams use to deploy to Google Cloud Platform in accordance with bol security policies and compliance standards. This mission-critical tooling enables hundreds of engineers to manage their cloud infrastructure efficiently, freeing them to focus on building features for our 13.5 million customers. As such, you directly impact developer productivity, application security, and, ultimately, the stability of services our customers rely on.

The biggest challenge

Modernizing our existing provisioning API while maintaining service stability. We’re embarking on an ambitious journey to minimize complexity, dependencies, and maintenance effort. Sometimes, thinner really is better! To succeed, you must excel at innovating and practical execution while continuously facilitating our application teams. You’ll need to navigate the tension between legacy systems and modern approaches, making thoughtful decisions that improve developer experience without disrupting critical workflows. How can we evolve our platform using industry-standard tools while ensuring a smooth transition for teams that depend on our services?

What You'll Do As Cloud Infra Engineer

You’ll collaborate on redesigning the provisioning system’s user interface. Currently, teams use our custom-developed DSL (Domain Specific Language), and we’re eager to make this simpler and more intuitive. Working with cutting-edge cloud technologies, you’ll leverage Kubernetes Config Connector and Argo CD to provision resources in Google Cloud Platform. As part of our support rotation, you’ll assist our support teams in troubleshooting issues, ensuring that bugs and errors get prompt attention and are quickly resolved. This direct interaction with internal customers provides valuable insights that inform our product development.

Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the modernization (‘leaner and meaner’) of our provisioning API
  • Working with Kubernetes and GCP to provision secure, compliant cloud resources
  • Providing key knowledge to assist supporting application teams to resolve infrastructure issues
  • Participating in code reviews and ensuring high-quality implementations

3 reasons why this is (not) for you

  • Focus on Enabling Others: This role is centered on providing tools and infrastructure for internal engineering teams, rather than developing end-user-facing features or products. If you’re looking for a position that directly impacts end customers or involves more visible outcomes, you might want to consider if this aligns with your ambitions.
  • Commitment to Modernizing Legacy Systems: While you’ll work on cutting-edge cloud technologies, a significant part of the role involves modernizing and simplifying an existing in-house tool (R2D2). If you prefer working exclusively on greenfield projects or are not keen on improving existing systems, this aspect might require adjustment.
  • Collaborative, Process-Oriented Work: The team emphasizes rigorous processes, including detailed code reviews, extensive testing across environments, and a strong focus on compliance and security. If you thrive in fast-moving, exploratory environments with less structure, this role’s collaborative and methodical approach might feel less dynamic.

Kubernetes Expertise

  • We're making big investments in the Kubernetes landscape. This is our tool of choice to provision highly available, highly scalable workloads into the public cloud. This is the right role for you if you have hands-on experience working with k8s.

Configuration Management Tools

  • You are familiar with the landscape of configuration and infrastructure management tools. Terraform, Kubernetes Config Connector, Puppet, Gatekeeper, Argo CD - all of these tools ring a bell and mean something to you.

High standards

  • We're on the critical path for many of the teams here at bol which means that we take our jobs and our work very seriously. We invest in brainstorming with our colleagues about solutions, we take merge request reviews seriously, and we test accordingly in multiple environments before we ship to production. If you have high standards for the work you do then this is the right place for you.

We take pride in our B Corp certification and strive for continuous improvement every day. Our annual bonus is tied to sustainability goals, and we are committed to equality and equal opportunities for all.
