Shape the Future of ASML’s Mechanical Design

Be part of progress

For decades, ASML’s machine designs have prioritized time to market, focusing primarily on rapid development and core functionality. However, as the market evolves and production volumes increase, there is a growing need to shift our design approach. Today, we must also emphasize serviceability, cost efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

The MCONS group, part of Development & Engineering, is responsible for several mechanical systems within our DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) machines, most notably, the outer covering. To meet these new demands, we are re-evaluating our design strategy. While several short-term programs are already underway, we are also looking ahead. We want to define a long-term vision, a "dot on the horizon", to guide our future development.

Your assignment

You will conduct a concept study for the outer covering of ASML's XT and NXT machine types, imagining what the design could look like if we were to start from scratch. This involves investigating the main requirements, defining concepts, ranking them, and elaborating on the highest potential.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Analyze current design challenges and requirements for outer coverings.
  • Research industry best practices and emerging trends in mechanical design.
  • Develop multiple design concepts based on identified requirements.
  • Evaluate and rank concepts using objective criteria.
  • Create detailed elaborations of the top-ranked concept.
  • Present findings and recommendations to the engineering team.
  • Collaborate with engineers to refine ideas and incorporate feedback.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Have a critical and constructive mindset, focused on achieving the best results through collaboration.
  • Are proactive and eager to learn, with the ability to think both broadly and in detail.
  • Have basic experience with CAD design tools.

This is a bachelor/master (thesis) internship for a minimum of 5 months, at least 4 days per week (with at least 2 days on-site). The start date of this internship is at the beginning of 2026.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship.
  • Attach your cover letter with a clear motivation explaining why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular.
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. If you are currently living or studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter should include your willingness to relocate.
  • If you are a non-EU citizen studying in the Netherlands, your university must be willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
