Join TenneT in Shaping Tomorrow’s Electricity Grid

At TenneT, we work every day on tomorrow’s electricity grid. Our goal? A reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system. As an Operating Engineer – Mechanical Systems you play a crucial role in preparing and supporting the 2GW offshore systems entering operation over the coming years. Ready to make an impact?

Your Role

As an Operating Engineer – Mechanical Systems, you help ensure that our future offshore grid connection assets are delivered, commissioned, and operated safely and efficiently. You will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and systems within our facilities, ensuring optimal performance and reliability of HVAC, plumbing, and other building systems, while adhering to safety and compliance standards. You shape processes, develop concepts, and contribute to operational readiness — enabling the Netherlands to rely on a stable and sustainable energy system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational readiness and engineering review – Guide design, commissioning, operations, and maintenance considerations for mechanical auxiliary systems, ensuring availability and long-term integrity.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, pumps, fire-fighting systems, cooling systems, freshwater installations, SCADA, and diesel generators.
  • Monitor system performance and conduct regular inspections to identify and resolve issues.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and respond to emergency repairs as needed.
  • Data and documentation quality – Assess, enhance, and safeguard documentation to improve safety, traceability, and maintenance performance.
  • Improvement and optimisation – Propose practical system setup solutions, capture lessons learned, and contribute to our continuous Operational Readiness Framework.
  • Safety leadership – Actively support a safe working environment for colleagues and partners across on- and offshore sites.
  • Collaborate with other engineering and facilities staff to ensure efficient building operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and system performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.

You will join the Offshore Mechanical Engineering team within Grid Field Operation Offshore Netherlands, led by Berendjan Zonneveld. Together with colleagues and Grid Connection Managers, you prepare assets for service and later oversee their safe and effective operation. Our culture is collaborative, international, fast-growing and quality-driven — where coordination, learning, innovation and teamwork define how we work.

Your Profile & Background

At TenneT, we are looking for professionals who help shape the future of our electricity grid. We expect you to bring the right experience and skills to make a valuable contribution to our team and mission.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Technology, or equivalent qualification.
  • Proven experience in operating and maintaining mechanical systems in a commercial or industrial environment, with hands-on experience in systems such as HVAC, fire-fighting systems, cooling systems, freshwater installations, SCADA, and diesel generators.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and building automation systems.
  • Experience interpreting P&IDs and applying them in practice.
  • Technical insight and practical mindset – Combine operational know-how with a structured thinking approach to define solutions for mechanical systems in complex offshore environments.
  • Analytical strength and planning skills – Assess risk, prioritise and structure actions, supporting smooth project-to-operations transitions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues efficiently.
  • Team mindset and adaptability – Thrive in diverse, intercultural settings and enjoy collaborating to deliver results.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with strong communication skills in Dutch and/or English.
  • Relevant technical certifications or licenses are a plus.
  • Willingness to travel and work in offshore environments; medical suitability and working-at-heights capability are required.
  • Willingness to relocate temporarily (approx. 3 years) to Singapore/Batam during construction phases, with return placement into TenneT’s operations organisation based on expat and Dutch contract terms.

Our Offer

TenneT gives you the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable energy future. Together with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, you work on innovative solutions that enable the energy transition. You’ll have room to develop your talents in an environment where your growth is a priority.

  • A permanent contract with a two-month probation period based on 40 hours per week or year contract with the intention to be determined after 1 or 2 years.
  • Market-conform salary in scale 8: €4151 to €8197 per month, excluding 8% holiday pay and a 6% year-end bonus, with 70% pension contribution.
  • Flexible benefits including hybrid working, travel allowance, internet reimbursement, and a home office allowance.
  • Support for wellbeing, including contributions to fitness membership and health insurance.
  • Development opportunities via the TenneT Academy.
  • Be part of a dynamic team focused on innovation and operational excellence.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
