Help build tomorrow’s electricity grid with TenneT

At TenneT, we work every day on tomorrow’s electricity grid. Our goal? A reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system. As a Sub Project Lead Commissioning HVDC Primary Systems in the Engineering Services team, you play a key role in realizing our 2GW programme — connecting offshore wind energy to the Dutch electricity grid. Ready to make an impact?

Your Role

As a Sub Project Lead Commissioning HVDC Primary Systems, you are responsible for managing and overseeing site activities related to primary installations during the construction phase of the 2GW Land Station in Borssele. You will plan, coordinate, and execute commissioning tasks to ensure that all technical systems meet contractual, quality, and safety standards, and are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. You drive smooth coordination between engineering, contractors, and commissioning teams, and ensure robust compliance with project specifications and safety standards.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage the commissioning of HVDC primary systems, including transformers, converter reactors, harmonic filters, GIS, AIS, converter valves, instrument transformers, bushings, and terminations, ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, and project management teams to align commissioning activities with overall project schedules.
  • Develop and implement commissioning plans, procedures, and documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, witness factory acceptance tests (FATs), and monitor compliance during manufacturing and installation.
  • Supervise and support commissioning engineers and technicians on site.
  • Review technical documentation, monitor site activities, and ensure testing procedures and records (ITPs/ITRs) meet TenneT standards.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues during commissioning, escalating as necessary.
  • Safeguard SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) compliance and ensure robust contractor performance on-site.
  • Prepare and present progress reports, technical evaluations, and lessons learned, and support the handover of commissioned systems to stakeholders.

You will work closely with the Sub Project Lead Primary from the core HVDC team and report hierarchically to the Lead Integration and Commissioning within the Engineering & Services department. Functionally, you report to the Sub Project Lead HVDC Land Stations and the Commissioning Manager. This role is based in Arnhem, with frequent presence required at the Borssele Land Station during the commissioning phase.

Your Profile & Background

At TenneT, we are looking for professionals who help shape the future of our electricity grid. We expect you to bring the right experience and skills to make a valuable contribution to our team and mission.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or comparable field).
  • Proven and advanced experience in commissioning HVDC or high voltage installations and systems.
  • Strong leadership, team management, coordination, and communication skills to guide on-site activities and technical discussions.
  • Structured, detail-oriented, and able to translate complex technical issues into clear actions.
  • Independent, proactive, and confident in working across disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel between Arnhem and Borssele and flexibility to be on-site during critical phases.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Our Offer

TenneT gives you the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable energy future. Together with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, you work on innovative solutions that enable the energy transition. You’ll have room to develop your talents in an environment where your growth is a priority.

  • A permanent contract with a two-month probation period based on 40 hours per week or a year contract with the intention to be determined after 1 or 2 years.
  • Market-conform salary in scale 8: €4151 to €8197 per month, excluding 8% holiday pay and a 6% year-end bonus, with 70% pension contribution.
  • Flexible benefits including hybrid working, travel allowance, internet reimbursement, and a home office allowance.
  • Support for wellbeing, including contributions to fitness membership and health insurance.
  • Development opportunities via the TenneT Academy.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge HVDC projects in a collaborative and innovative team environment.
