Backend Engineer (Kotlin/Java, Microservices)

How you can make a difference

As a Backend Engineer, you will help advance the AH tech landscape into a modern, cutting-edge technology environment. You will be joining our Promotions area in the Retail Business Platform execution cluster. Teams within the Promotions area are responsible for the creation of sales promotions and campaigns that are attractive and beneficial to Albert Heijn consumers, all while ensuring 24/7 uptime on mission-critical environments. Your work will have a significant impact on the daily lives of our customers.

This is how you will reinvent food retail:

• Contribute to the advancement of our current tech landscape by shaping technical architecture, standards, and guidelines.
• Develop technical solutions on a modern, innovative tech foundation to scale our ever-growing core business.
• Develop proofs of concept, build code, implement and execute automated testing, ensure security and code quality, and develop best practices.
• Share your expertise and contribute to initiatives within your product cluster and the broader AH Retail Technology Platform.
• Be a valued team member who contributes and removes obstacles.
• Share technical and process improvement ideas with your colleagues.

In your role, you are responsible for the applications and products developed by your product team.

Your team and office:

You will be joining the Retail Business Platform cluster, Promotions area, working closely with other DevOps (frontend and backend) engineers, solution consultants, and the product owner. Our teams work in a hybrid way: both from home and in the office, which is conveniently located next to the train station in Zaandam.

You will participate in creating technical designs, developing and deploying solutions, and maintaining them. Expect to spend most of your time on hands-on delivery, pair programming, and code reviews. You are expected to ensure technical quality and speed of delivery within our Agile Scrum cadence. Dutch is not mandatory for this role.

The recipe for maximum impact:

• 8+ years of hands-on experience in the full software lifecycle development in Java/Kotlin
• Broad technical knowledge of Spring Boot, Github Actions/Azure DevOps/Jenkins, KaaS/Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), MongoDB (or any NoSQL DB), event streaming and messaging platforms (Kafka), and Cloud (Azure)
• A critical eye for non-functional requirements such as scalability, maintainability, and security
• Knowledge of GraphQL is a plus
• Experience in solution design, technical implementations, operations, business alignment, and prioritization within a team
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to work in agile teams
• Already located in The Netherlands
