Design, prototype, and validate an advanced check station for our Individual Carrier System (ICS) used in baggage handling. The station will dynamically scan ICS carriers at full capacity using state-of-the-art technologies to assess performance, detect anomalies, and support operational diagnostics.

Individual Carrier System (ICS) carriers are essential for transporting baggage through automated baggage handling systems. An advanced check station is needed to:

  • Validate carrier status under dynamic conditions, to optimize operational performance
  • Enable automated diagnostics, to optimize our service proposition

The check station should:

  • Validate whether the carrier is empty, loaded with one item, or multiple items.
  • Validate whether items are within allowed envelope and dimensions.
  • Determine the physical class of the bag (Standard, Semi-conveyable, etc.).
  • Determine the shape and orientation of the bag.
  • Validate whether there is foreign material stuck (e.g. stickers, dirt).
  • Be compliant with technical requirements (e.g. physical damage, material is deforming).

Department description

You will be part of the Development Center Airports, which develops end-to-end solutions deployed in our Airports projects globally. You will be part of one of our multidisciplinary teams involved in ICS solution design. We have an innovation center at our Headquarter in Veghel where we test and validate our newly developed solutions before deployment in operational environments.

Tasks/responsibilities

  • Review ICS technical requirements and carrier specifications
  • Analyze baggage and carrier behavior and failure modes using historical data
  • Design a check station with a modular future approach in mind
  • Integrate off the shelf sensors/technologies (e.g. AI models) and potentially develop new models for dynamic scanning and anomaly detection
  • Prototype the station
  • Conduct lab and field tests to validate performance
  • Document findings, main risk/attention points and propose potential improvements on our current solutions to carrier design or operational parameters

Your profile

  • Familiarity with sensor integration, AI model training, and data logging
  • Interest in logistics automation and system testing
  • Mandatory enrolment to a Dutch Education System & resident of The Netherlands.
