The Philips Digital Processing group supports business units in accelerating innovation in healthcare by developing embedded software for cutting-edge Philips products. To offer the best solutions to our customers, there is a need to use any form of AI on microcontrollers with or without NPU support. Today’s platforms like Edge Impulse can build datasets, train models, and optimize libraries to run directly on device; from the smallest microcontrollers to gateways with the latest neural accelerators (and anything in between).

We are always investing in new technologies for the next generation of Philips products and solutions. AI is one of these topics. How can we support AI in embedded devices running on a microcontroller?

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Make use of the Edge Impulse platform
  • Collect samples
  • Train the model
  • Execute the model on a microcontroller
  • Investigate other platforms (STM32Cube.AI, NanoEdge AI Studio)
  • Investigate different targets (STM32Nxxx with NPU support)

The first use-case will be a single and double tap detector based on acceleration samples. This can be implemented on an evaluation kit and later integrated into an existing product for demonstration purposes.

Expected results:

  • Performance indicators with respect to CPU load, RAM usage, and code-size.

You are responsible for:

  • Setting up the Edge Impulse framework
  • Retrieving samples from the evaluation board
  • Training the model
  • Executing the model on a microcontroller
  • Creating a demonstration on a real device
  • Defining performance indicators

If time allows:

  • Investigating other platforms
  • Investigating different targets (STM32Nxxx with NPU support)

You are a part of:

A multidisciplinary engineering design group, where an open environment is of great importance, and where self-development and asking questions is encouraged. You will be part of the Data Processing group and work together with people from other groups in the Electronic Systems & IoT department. The Electronic Systems & IoT department is part of Philips Engineering Solutions and is located on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor student in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or Embedded Engineering
  • Familiarity with programming on embedded devices
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Fluency in English
  • Affinity for both theoretical and practical work

In return, we offer you:

A non-stop growth opportunity within a global multinational company. In addition, we want to remunerate you well for the opportunity. This includes:

  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on your education level and if you need to relocate to The Netherlands. Part-time internships receive the allowance pro-rata.
  • Housing compensation: Should you need to relocate near our office, we’ll offer you a monthly allowance of €300 net if the location is in the vicinity of Amsterdam, or €255 net for all other Philips locations. To be eligible, we’ll just ask for the rental contract from your landlord, and your usual home-work travel distance needs to be more than 50 km or 1.5 hours of travel time (for a one-way trip).
  • Travel compensation: If you are not eligible for a free public transport card, you will receive up to €192 net as a monthly allowance.
  • Paid holidays per internship term.

How we work at Philips: We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week.

Philips is a leading health technology company focused on improving people’s lives across the health continuum – from healthy living and prevention, to diagnosis, treatment and home care. Applying advanced technologies and deep clinical and consumer insights, Philips delivers integrated solutions that address the Quadruple Aim: improved patient experience, better health outcomes, improved staff experience, and lower cost of care.
