The energy transition needs you as an intern

Due to the energy transition and digitalization, the Dutch electricity grid is becoming increasingly full. To better utilize the grid, smart calculations are needed. Bottom-up models help to accurately predict the energy consumption of customers. However, these models currently take little account of technical effects in the grid, such as energy loss and cable reactions. A faster method to include these effects, without complicated calculations, can make the grid smarter and more efficient.

The goal of this project is to develop a quick method using machine learning to estimate the influence of the electricity grid on energy consumption. This will use information about the technical properties of the grid, such as resistance and capacity. These data will be processed in a graph model. With existing models, such as the Power Grid Model, the method can be tested and improved. This way, we make predicting energy consumption faster and smarter.

We are creating the energy grid of the future, for everyone, with everyone. And as an intern at the Research Team, you can play your part in this.

Your role will involve:

  • Learning, developing, and getting to know the business world.
  • Researching smart ways to predict grid effects.
  • Working with machine learning and graph models.
  • Testing and improving your method with existing grid models.
  • Thinking about how we can make the power grid smarter and more efficient.

You complete our network

Alliander is made up of different business units. With our large group of talented professionals, we develop and manage the energy grid for millions of people and businesses in the Netherlands. Everything we do, we do with an eye on the people who rely on us: our customers. And thanks to our talents, we have the utmost confidence in the energy future of the Netherlands. Together with you, we make the energy transition possible, for and with our customers.

You will be part of the Research Center for Digital Technologies. The AI for Energy Grids Lab is part of this Research Center. In this lab, we work on smart solutions with artificial intelligence to make the power grid better, more sustainable, and more reliable. The core team consists of eight researchers (PhD candidates) conducting doctoral research at various Dutch universities. Additionally, students and researchers work on projects that strengthen and broaden the lab.

You energise our network

We will help you get to know the world of business while also working on your personal development. You will learn from us and we will learn from you innovative solutions, especially if you combine this with:

  • Currently pursuing a university degree in the direction of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Good programming skills in Python and PyTorch and experience with machine learning.
  • Knowledge and experience in modeling complex systems and working with large amounts of data.
  • An independent, eager to learn, and analytical attitude.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Interest in the energy transition.
  • You reside in the Netherlands.

Attractive intern allowance and benefits package

What’s in it for you?

  • An internship allowance of €550.00 per month based on a 40-hour workweek.
  • A laptop and, if necessary, a phone.
  • An NS Business Card, allowing you to travel sustainably. If you use your own transport to get to work, you will receive a kilometre allowance.
