About this position
Did you see the Russian convoy debacle near Kyiv in early 2022? It highlighted that a well-functioning military logistics system is essential. This internship focuses on improving Dutch military logistics by studying the capacitated resupply problem (DOI: 10.4230/OASIcs.ATMOS.2023.18).
What will be your role?
The objective of this internship is to solve several extensions of the capacitated resupply problem (CRP). In the initial stage, you will construct an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation and solve it using an ILP solver. Furthermore, you will assess the impact of adding additional variables and constraints. These include, but are not limited to, adding extra nodes, letting vehicles or roads break down and adding different vehicle types. We expect that the ILP will eventually become too complex to solve in a reasonable amount of time, in which case you will come up with either a cutting plane approach or a heuristic to solve the problem.
What we expect from you
You are in the final stages of your master’s degree in econometrics, operations research, (applied) mathematics, computer science or a related field and are interested in the field of supply chain logistics. You have experience with formulating optimisation problems as integer linear programming problems and solving them using a solver such as CPLEX, Gurobi, Mosek, or HiGHS in the programming language of your choice. Furthermore, experience with (meta)heuristics and approximation algorithms is a plus, but not required. Next to technical expertise, we value a proactive and analytical mindset and the ability to work independently on a project.

If you have been abroad for more than 6 consecutive months, or if you do not have the Dutch nationality, it may take longer.
