Internship R&D Micro

Are you a curious and motivated student in microbiology, biotechnology or related studies? Do you want to contribute to sustainable agriculture through hands-on R&D experience? Join Koppert’s Microbial Processing department and be part of cutting-edge research that improves natural crop protection around the world.

About the Department

Koppert’s R&D Microbial Processing team focuses on the development and optimization of microbial products for biological pest and disease control. Our research supports both innovation (new strains, new ideas) and operational excellence (scaling and optimizing production). Within the team, scientists and lab specialists work closely together to translate scientific insights into practical, effective products that support growers worldwide.

Available Internship Topics

We are currently offering three internship projects. Each topic is rooted in real, ongoing research.

1. Alternative Medium Components for EPNs

This project focuses on optimizing the growth conditions of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) by testing alternative nutrient sources in the cultivation medium.

  • Conduct lab experiments using shake flasks and bioreactors
  • Evaluate microbial growth, yield, and broth quality
  • Analyze and report findings to support process optimization

Requirements:

  • Educational level: HBO, BSc or MSc
  • Background in microbiology, biotechnology or related field
  • Basic lab skills and data analysis (Excel or similar)
  • Interest in process development and fermentation is a plus

2. Development of a Rapid Quantification Method for Microbial Products

This project aims to design a fast, reliable method for quantifying microbial concentrations in biological products — with molecular and/or microbiological techniques.

  • Perform literature research and design quantification approaches
  • Apply molecular biology and microbial analysis tools
  • Collect and interpret data, and help validate the method

Requirements:

  • Educational level: MSc preferred (HBO/BSc possible with strong lab experience)
  • Strong background in molecular biology or microbiology
  • Experience with PCR, DNA/RNA handling, or quantification techniques
  • Accuracy, analytical mindset, and a proactive attitude

3. Fungal DSP Stability

This project explores the physical and biological stability of an intermediate formulation of a fungal biosinsecticide.

  • Conduct stability tests under various conditions
  • Assess product quality and mass balance in downstream processes
  • Propose formulation improvements based on results

Requirements:

  • Educational level: BSc or MSc
  • Background in microbiology, biotechnology, formulation science, or related field
  • Attention to detail and ability to document experimental procedures
  • Interest in product stability and applied formulation research

What else are we looking for?

  • A proactive, curious mindset with strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Good command of English (Dutch is a plus)
  • Enrolled as a student during the full internship period
  • Candidates must be registered as students at a recognized educational institution. This role is an internship, not a full-time job offer.

What we offer

  • A meaningful internship within a globally respected biotech company
  • Supervision by experienced scientists and access to professional lab facilities
  • Flexible working hours and a monthly internship allowance
  • A chance to contribute to innovations that support 100% sustainable agriculture
  • A welcoming, collaborative culture within a family-owned organization

About Koppert

At Koppert, we work with nature. We develop and produce biological solutions for pest control, natural pollination, and plant resilience. Our mission is to make agriculture healthier, safer, and more productive — while reducing the use of synthetic chemicals.

We are an independent, family-owned company, active in more than 100 countries, driven by science, and united by a shared commitment to sustainability. Join us in our mission to restore the natural balance in agriculture.

To make our world more sustainable, we need ways of growing that are both safe and healthy. We believe the answers to these agricultural challenges lie in nature itself. So we partner with nature. And help our planet to find its balance. Using natural enemies to combat pests, bumblebees for pollination, microbials, and biostimulants that support, protect, and strengthen crops. Improving plant health both above and underground.
